The loss of a job can have a very serious impact on the individual. The immediate effect, of course, is a sharp drop in income. The economic pressure on the jobless is very severe, particularly for those who have young children or long-term commitments for expenses for houses and education.

But the effects of unemployment are not merely financial; they are also social and psychological. As one out-of-work teacher puts it: “It’s difficult when you strip away(去掉)all the things that supposedly hold you together in terms of an identity. Your work, your money, whatever is power to you, whatever is responsibility, whatever means freedom and choice.” I had to ask myself, “Who am I now?  What will I do now?” All too often, long-term unemployment may thrust the individual into boredom, despair, ill-temper, and perhaps, conflict with other family members. Even those who keep their jobs are affected by rates of unemployment, for they begin to fear for own future. Lacking the confidence that workers have in times of full employment, they negotiate less aggressively for improvements in pay or working conditions, for they and the employers know that if they do not like the job as it is, others will gladly take it. Unemployment is always accompanied, in fact, by underemployment━the situation in which people are working either for extremely low wages or at jobs below their level of skill.

     The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you , since nearly 70% of the earth’s surface (表面）is covered with water . But about 97% of that is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3% — the fresh water (淡水)from rivers , lakes , underground , and other sources . And we can not even use all of that. Even worse, some of it has been made dirty.

　　 However, as things stand today, this fresh water is still enough for us . But our need for water is becoming larger and larger quickly — almost day by day . We should take steps to do with this problem now and in this way we can get away from a serious world-wide water shortage（缺少）later on .

　   We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop ways of reusing  it .Today in most large cities , water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system（下水道）. From there it returns to sea or runs into underground places.

　　 But even if every large city reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of sea water in the world is to remove (去掉) the salt . If we take these steps we’ll be in no danger of drying up.
