Henry likes fish in the river near our house. Once Henry caught a big fish and he was very exciting! All the other fishermen left their place and came to see his fish. One of whom had a camera and he took a picture of Henry with a big fish. One day, Henry fell into the river. The grass was slippery because there had some mud on it. While he was pulled his line, he slipped and fall into the dirty water. Henry could not swim, but the two nearest fishermen pulled him at once. He ran to home, with mud all over his clothes and face.

One day in the restaurant where I worked, I am serving a table of four and each person

had ordered the different kind of fish. Three plate were already on the table when the man

closest to me pointing to one plate and asked me the name of the fish on it. After I could

answer him, he continued to ask me the name of the fish on another one plate. I was about to

answer him while I noticed that the last plate on my tray(托盘) began to fall. They fell noisily

to the floor seconds late, spreading its contents on the carpet. Everyone stared me and I stood

there with a red face.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, many people thought that the Americanfamily was falling apart.A century later, we know that this was not the case. However,although the family is still alive in the United States, its size and shape were very different100 years ago.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were mainly two types of families in theUnited States: the extended and the nuclear. The extended family usually includesgrandparents, parents, and children living under the same roof. The nuclear familyconsists of only parents and children.

Today there are many different kinds of families. Some people live in “traditional” families, that is, a stay-home mother, a working father, and their own biologicalchildren. Others live in two-paycheck families, single-parent families, adoptive or foster,families, blended families (where men and women who were married before marry againand combine the children from previous marriages into the new families），childlessfamilies, and so on.

What caused the structure of the family to change? In the early 1900s the birthratebegan to fall and the divorce rate began to rise. Women were suddenly choosing to go tocollege and take jobs outside the home. In the 1930s and 1940s, many families faced seriousfinancial, or money problems during the Great Depression, when many people lost theirjobs. During World War II（1939-1945)，5 million women were left alone to take care oftheir homes and their children. Because many men were at war, thousands of these "war widows" had to go to work outside their home.

During the next ten years, the situation changed. There were fewer divorces, andpeople married at a younger age and had more children than the previous generation. It wasunusual for a mother to work outside the home during the years when her children weregrowing tip. Families began leaving cities and moving into single-family homes in thesuburbs. The traditional family seemed to be returning.

In the years between 1960s and 1990s, there were many important changes in thestructure of the family. From the 1960s to the early 1970s, the divorce rate doubled andthe birthrate fell by half. The number of single-parent families tripled, and the number ofcouples living together without being married doubled again. In fact, the single-parenthousehold, once unusual, has replaced the "traditional" family as the typical family in theStates. If we can judge from history, however, this will probably change again in thetwenty-first century.

The Changes of the American Family

I was fifteen months old, a happy kid until the day I fell. It was a    31   fall. I landed on a glass rabbit which cut my eye badly enough to make it blind. Trying to save the eye, the doctors stitched(缝合) the eyeball together where it was    32  , leaving a big ugly scar(疤痕) in the middle of my eye. The attempt    33  , but my mother, in all of her wisdom, found another doctor who knew that if the eye were removed    34  , my face would grow up badly distorted(扭曲)，   35   my scarred, sightless, cloudy and gray eye lived on with me. As I grew, this sightless eye in so many ways    36   me.

Mama’s words were of great help for me to face the world    42  . As a teenager, even though I tended to look down to hide my shame, I found that sometimes when I held my head up high and let people know me, they    43   me. In high school, I was    44   both academically and socially. I was    45   elected class president. My mother’s words helped me begin to realize that by letting people look at my face, I let them    46   the intelligence and beauty behind both eyes, even if they couldn’t see it on the    47  .
Now I’m a happy wife and great mother. The message “Hold your head up high,” has been
   48   many times in my   49   home. Each of my children has felt    50   invitation, and the gift my mother gave me has lived on in another generation.

After John’s first wife died, he gets married again. His second wife was more younger than he was and they often quarreled. John once came home lately after work, his wife said to him that he had waited for two hours. She was too angry that she gave him a push, which made him fall down the stairs so he is old and weak. When Steven, one of John’s neighbor, heard the noise, he was eager to know which was happening. He came John’s front door and knocked. “What’s happened?” he asked. “My coat fell down the stairs,” John answered. When the neighbor said a coat wouldn’t make so many noise, John answered, “Of course it would if I was inside it!”
