In the depths of my memory, many things I did with my father still live. These things come to represent, in fact, what I call __21__and love.

I don’t remember my father ever getting into a swimming tool. But he did __22__the water. Any kind of __23__ride seemed to give him pleasure. __24__he loved to fish; sometimes he took me along.

But I never really liked being on the water, the way my father did. I liked being __25__the water, moving through it, __26__it all around me. I was not a strong __27__, or one who learned to swim early, for I had my __28__. But I loved being in the swimming pool close to my father’s office and __29__those summer days with my father, who __30__ come by on a break. I needed him to see what I could do. My father would stand there in his suit, the __31__person not in swimsuit.

After swimming, I would go __32__ his office and sit on the wooden chair in front of his big desk, where he let me __33__anything I found in his top desk drawer. Sometimes, if I was left alone at his desk __34__ he worked in the lab, an assistant or a student might come in and tell me perhaps I shouldn’t be playing with his _35__. But my father always __36__and said easily, “Oh, no, it’s __37__.” Sometimes he handed me coins and told me to get __38__ an ice cream…

A poet once said, “We look at life once, in childhood,; the rest is __39__.” And I think it is not only what we “look at once, in childhood” that determines our memories, but __40__, in that childhood, look at us.

I stole your dog. No,I didn't set a foot on your house, but from the condition of your dog,I can imagine what it looks like—the word “rubbish” comes to mind.

I found her along a road, with a heavy chain wrapped around her neck, still attached to rotten boards from her doghouse. Not only did I know that most of the town people had already ignored her, judging by the place where I found her,but I knew that if she had gotten into the woods, the “cross” that she dragged behind her would have wrapped itself around a tree until starvation or thirst killed her.

She has a beautiful name now.Already in the first week she has come to look more like she should. Her eyes sparkle and she has learned to wag her tail in greeting. She has stopped flinching(畏缩) when I make a sudden movement, because she knows now that I won't beat her.In fact, she rarely leaves my side. She's even become brave enough to bark at a cat and today I looked out of the window as she attempted to play with other dogs. No,it's clear that she does not miss you or her former life on a chain.

It's not clear yet whether she'll remain here or whether I'll find her a loving home where she can count on more individual attention than I can give her,but one thing is certain, this is a bit of stolen “property” which is never returning to you.So sue me,accuse me,plead with the court that she is rightfully yours...I'm convinced that this is the best “crime” I've ever committed.Hardly anything has pleased me more than the day when I stole your dog.I need only look into her beautiful brown eyes to know that she'd defend my decision with her life.If we have one prayer,it is that you will not replace her,and if we have one special day to celebrate together,it is the day I stole your dog and the day she stole my heart.

1.What's the author's attitude towards the former owner of the dog?

A.Puzzled. B.Angry.

C.Shocked. D.Satisfied.

2.It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.the dog is not lovely

B.the dog tried to find a kind master

C.the dog was treated badly by its former master

D.the author will be charged with stealing the dog

3.What did the author think of his theft?

A.He was afraid of being punished.

B.He thought he had to do it.

C.He believed that the law would allow him to do so.

D.He did it with pride.

Last year my sixth-grader daughter ,Elizabeth ,was forced to put up with science .Her education week after week ,contained mindless memorization of big words like “batholith” and “saprophyte” She learned by heart the achievements of famous scientists who did things like “improved nuclear fu-sion(核聚变) “—never mind that she hasn’t the least idea of what nuclear fusion means .Eliza—beth did very well (she’s good at memorizing things ). And now she hates science .My eighth-grader son ,Ben ,also suffered from science education . Week after week he had to perform lab experiments with answers already known .Ben figured out how to guess the right answers ,so he got good grades .Now he hates science ,too.
