摘要: Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.Volunteer Work Can Boost Your Career. B.Mulcahy’s Voluntary Work Experience. C.It’s a Good Chance to Be a Volunteer. D.Volunteer Work. B Dogs may help save the day in the Philippines, as they use their noses to smell out survivors buried by Friday’s mudslide. The team of dogs arrived in the Philippines from Spain, and this Tuesday they were just beginning their work. Search officials told CNN they hope the recent rain will wash away the smell of rescue teams so the dogs can do their job more accurately. The dogs were brought in after sound equipment found sounds coming from deep inside the ruins, at a place where a school stood before the mudslide covered it. The sounds could mean people are still alive under all the mud or it could just be the earth resettling. On Monday, rescue workers worked at the school site until three in the morning, trying to locate survivors, and they will begin digging again as soon as the dogs think they find someone. Human teams from the US, Malaysia, and Australia are all trying to help, too. But so far they have yet to locate any survivors. Rescue workers told CNN that an earlier report that 50 survivors had been found was false. How did all that mud bury the village in the first place? On Friday, 2,400-foot Mt Kanabag turned into a mudslide after two weeks of constant rain weakened it. The mountain crumbled and the mud fell onto the village Guinsaugon, burying the 1,800 people who lived there . Out of the 300 houses in the village, only 3 were not covered by the mud . The village is on a southern Philippine Island called Levte. Rescue efforts have been difficult because the village takes six hours to reach from the nearest airport. Hopefully, the dogs can help their human friends find survivors.

The most common way to find a job opening is by reading the classified ads section of your local newspaper. Some people also get job leads from their school counselors. If you’re interested in working at a restaurant, bookstore garden center, or other service business in your area, the best approach is to go there and fill out an application form.

If you can afford to work on a short-term basis without pay, volunteering can be a great way to get quality experience that looks good on a resume.Check out the volunteer center in your area(or online)for ideas and offer to coach soccer or help out with a summer camp.Help your favorite teacher tutor summer-school students.Walk dogs at your local animal shelter.Work with a local environmental organization on river cleanup.Volunteering means you’ll be working for a good cause-something that future employers or colleges like to see on an applicant’s resume-while investing time in your career goals.

Your school counselor may be able to help open other doors of opportunity via internships. Some companies and businesses offer bright students short-term, hands-on training in exchange for a willingness to learn and work hard.If you perform well at our internship, you may be offered a full-time job next summer or even an ongoing part-time job.Internships can also provide you with valuable references that can help you to land future jobs.

If traditional job opportunities don’t appeal to you, consider more creative opportunities.Be your own boss by starting a pet sitting, dog walking, lawn care, computer services, or cleaning business.Print up flyers(小传单)advertising the services your business offers, your rates, and your phone number or email address, then drop one off at every house in your neighborhood.

Some others also ask me how to have an interview. It’s not just previous job history or unique skills that matter at the interview. Both your attitude and your appearance affect your chances of getting the job you want. You’ve probably heard your parents talk about making a good first impression with what you wear.

Several years ago, while attending a communication course, I experienced a most unusual thing. The instructor asked us to list anything in our past that we felt ashamed of, guilty about or regretted. The next week he invited participants to read their lists aloud. This seemed like a very private matter, but there's always some brave soul in the crowd who would volunteer. The man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story:

“While making my list, I remembered an incident from high school.I grew up in a small town in Iowa. There was a Sheriff in town that none of us kids liked. One night, my two friends and I climbed the tall water tank(水罐水箱)in the middle of town, and wrote on the tank in bright red letters:Sheriff Brown is a fool. The next day, the town arose to see our glorious sign.Within two hours.Sheriff Brown had my two friends and me in his office. My friends admitted what they did and I lied, denying the truth. No one ever found out.”

Nearly 20 years later, Sheriff Brown's name appears on my list.I didn't even know if he was still alive.Last weekend, I dialed information in my hometown back in Iowa.Sure enough, there was a Roger Brown still listed.I dialed his number. After a few rings, I heard:“‘Hello?’I said,‘Sherriff Brown?’Pause.‘Yes.’‘Well, this is Jimmy Calkins.I want you to know that I did it.’Pause.‘I knew it!’he yelled back.We had a good laugh and a lively discussion. His closing words were:‘Jimmy, I always felt bad for you because your friends got it off their chest, and I knew you were carrying it around all these years.I want to thank you for calling me…for your sake.’”

Jimmy gave me much inspiration and I know that no matter how difficult the situation is, it is never too late to clear up the past and begin anew.(重新开始)

Are you dreaming of taking a trip on your own? Here is some advice on how to make your once-in-a-lifetime journey and how to stay safe when you get there.

Before you begin to look at places, activities and plane tickets, you must set a budget. When you search through the websites about travelling, it can be so easy to add another week here or there, or choose an extra activity. Setting a budget can avoid(避免)creating a huge bill, which starts very small.

With so many countries on this planet it is difficult to decide where to go. By narrowing down your search to voluntary (自愿的) work or a relaxing holiday, you can save a lot of time looking through websites.

After deciding where to go, you need to research the country. Find out when each season is. It would be disappointing if you were taking part in an outdoor-based activity and it rained most days. Look into medical information, as you may need certain medicine for certain countries. Above all, make sure you can afford to go to this country and take part in the activities you have dreamt about. Don’t raise your hopes too high before you know for certain it is within your budget.

By carrying a credit (信用) card with you at all times it is possible to stop yourself getting lost. Mobile phones are very important as well. However, do not depend completely on them, since electronic machines can break without warning. Therefore, always carry a list of emergency (紧急情况) phone numbers, names and addresses. Finally, learn a little of the language. Do not expect that the people there speak your own language. After all, you are in their country.

Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask.

Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties.

Volunteers usually help in many different ways. The may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel kids against drugs. Work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.

Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody                can become a volunteer.

The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. A long weekend is a great opportunity to do something a little different. Many people use a long weekend for a getaway, a short trip to leave the stress of their everyday lives behind and explore, learn, or relax.
Hotel Romance
Many hotels and resorts feature something special to start the getaway, such as champagne, flowers, or a fruit basket in the room on arrival. Getaway packages usually include a room with something special, a heart shaped bed, for example. Additional benefits could be room service meals or other private dining, plus tickets or discounts for local attractions.
Visit a Spa
Spa getaways can take place at a location that focuses only on spa services or at a hotel that offers a spa as one of its features. Some spas emphasize treatments fit for their geographic area or a local attraction. A spa in a grape growing region might provide grape juice masks, or a hotel near a hot spring could offer mineral baths. Most spas offer a range of massage, health and beauty treatments, so a spa getaway can be relaxing with other benefits.
Learn a Skill
A long weekend may not be enough time to become an expert at something new, but it provides a way for people to begin their explorations. Some organizations offer intensive courses that last two or three days. People with special interests can get away from their routines while learning such things as how to make beer, speak a new language, or take better photos.
Help Others
Some organizations cooperate with businesses to have accommodations (住宿) and activities for short-term volunteers. Most volunteer vacations involve ecology friendly or charity activities. A volunteer getaway is a way to relieve stress and help others at the same time.
Stay in a National Park
For those who want to relax in a rural environment, a national park fits the bill. Most national parks provide camping areas for tents and trailers. Several have cabins (小屋) within the parks available to rent. A getaway to a national park provides privacy, stress relief, and the time to get to know some important natural resources.
