Do you want to see the effects of global warming? Then head north. Will Steger is going to take all of us there.
Steger, 64, the first person to make a dogsled trip to the North Pole, is a very famous and admired polar explorer. He’s at home in frozen parts of the world where few humans ever step on. Steger is also a devoted environmentalist who was early to ring the alarm bell on global warming. He saw its effects firsthand in frequent polar expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica.
Now Steger is about to lead a team of six young adventurers on a 1,400-mile, 60-day-long dogsled trip across Ellesmere Island, in the Canadian Arctic. The sea ice in that region should still be frozen. “We want to take our audience to the front lines of global warming,” says Steger. The team will be uploading videos, stories and photos to the website globalwarming101.com as they march along, allowing armchair adventurers and kids in classrooms to follow their progress day to day. “We can actually bring the audience up there,” Steger says.
Steger’s team will include some already-famous young explorers. Sam Branson, the 22-year-old son of British airline tycoon (大亨) Richard Branson, is an experienced Arctic traveler. Also on the journey will be 27-year-old Norwegian Sigrid Ekran. Last year, Ekran became only the second woman in history to win Rookie (新秀) of the Year for the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
What they will see may be very surprising. Even Steger doesn’t know exactly what to expect. Climate change has already reshaped the geography of the Arctic. “Within a decade or less, it’s going to be impossible to reach the North Pole by dog team without flotation (漂浮),” says Steger.
Climate change is happening, but people can change too. Their willingness to change will determine the shape of the Earth’s future

Last month, the president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, held an underwater meeting. The purpose of the ocean floor conference? To highlight the effects of global warming on his island nation.

The Maldives, located in the Indian Ocean, is the lowest-lying country on Earth. Melting glaciers and polar ice are causing sea levels to rise, putting the Maldives and other low-lying areas at risk of being swallowed by the sea within the next 100 years.

What can be done? Scientists and leaders from 190 nations will try to figure that out at the United Nations climate change conference next month. The main goal of the meeting is to come up with a new climate agreement for 2012 and beyond. That is when the existing plan, the Kyoto Protocol (《京都议定书》), will expire. The agreement was created in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997. Since then, it has been ratified (正式批准) by 190 nations. The countries promised to limit the amount of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, that they produced each year.

The debate over who should cut greenhouse emissions (排放) has been going on for years. The US has been hesitant to reduce emissions unless fast-growing nations such as China and India also reduce their use of fossil fuels. In recent months, China has taken steps to be greener. But India has been unwilling to change. It argues that it is unfair for rich nations to ask poorer countries to cut down on emissions.

While world leaders work on a plan in Copenhagen, there are many things you can do to help the planet. You can save fuel by walking or biking instead of riding in a car. You can start a recycling program in your community. You can plant trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and give off oxygen.

64. The underlined word “expire” in Paragraph 3 probably means _____.

A. cause trouble            B. go into effect            C. come to an end         D. gain support

65. According to the passage, limiting greenhouse emissions _____.

A. has been a controversial question

B. is well performed in the Maldives

C. will make poor countries poorer

D. means banning carbon dioxide emissions

66. What does the author suggest?

A. Like the Maldives, other island countries should take action.

B. Both the US and India should cut greenhouse emissions.

C. World leaders should focus more on climate change.

D. Everyone should get involved in cutting greenhouse emissions.

With the popular low-carbon lifestyle, energy saving occurs more frequently in everyday life. Here are a number of easy suggestions you can follow to keep cool without an air conditioner. Most don’t need electricity as well.

1.       Wet your wrists and other pulse points with cold water. Use a piece of ice wrapped in a face cloth. Constantly cooling off the wrists will also cool off the body. Never use just ice; make sure it is wrapped in a towel or something similar. Studies show that this will reduce your core body temperature by as much as 3.5℃. The relief is almost immediate, and will last for up to one hour!

2.       Drink lots of cold drinks. Water is the best but cool liquid of any type that will help to cool you down. The electrolytes(电解质)help to make sure you don’t lost vital minerals through sweating. Adding ice will also help cool you off. Ice does not actually help you cool off if it is in the water you will drink. Cool water does help, and the colder the water is, the more energy our body spends in making it body temperature so that your body can use it.

3.       Keep still and quiet. This is not a good time for exercising, sports or running around . Keep these activities for the evening when the air becomes cooler and the sun goes down.

4.       Place wet towels on the back of your neck and also the top of one’s head. Athletic team doctors have used this for years!

5.       Use perspiration to cool the body down. If you don’t follow Number3, then water vapor produced by sweating actually take heat away form your body if it is exposed to air and allowed to evaporate. The best thing to do is to put your sweaty self in the path of a cool breeze of fan

6.       Stay in the shade.  Read a good book, sit still or take a nap.

7.       Open the windows to let in a breeze. Use screens to keep out insects if they are a problem.

8.       Go swimming. If you can, select a shady body of water.

46. The author suggests adding ice into the drinks because_______________.

A. ice can actually help people cool off

B. icy drinks contain more vital minerals

C. icy drinks cost more body energy

D. people love cold drinks in hot weather

47. Which of the following suggestions is NOT given to people who want to cool off?

A. Keep still and quiet and quit exercising completely.

B Expose your sweaty body to moving air after exercise.

C. Stay in a shady place with enough fresh air.

D. Put wet towels on the back of your neck to cool you down.

48. What does the underlined word “perspiration” in Para.6 mean?

A. Exercising.       B. Drinking.       C. Sleeping.       D. Sweating

49. It can be inferred that the author encourages the readers to ________________.

A. spend the summer inside the house     B. relieve pain with a piece of ice

C. use less electricity to save energy      D. avoid being exposed to the wind

50. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Icy Water Can Help You Keep Cool

B. Keep Cool without an Air conditioner

C. Suggestions to People in Summer

D. What Can We Do in the Hot summer
