摘要:3.For what purpose does the pilot shut off all the engines? A. To find out exactly what happens. B. To save fuel. C. To fly even more slowly D. To keep balance B Robert Spring, a 19th century forger, was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of Americans. Spring was born in English in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he became rich by selling his small but real collection of early U.S. autographs . Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old bocks. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale. Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t deal with a respectable buyer but people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals. In Spring’s time. right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General“Stonewall Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp - eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.

Before a new airliner goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests more important than all the others. One of them is very strange and the other is very dangerous.

The first of these is called the“tank test”. A modern airliner must fly at very high altitudes. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, or“pressurized”, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window, for example, is like a huge, giant foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to crack, the plane would explode in the sky. This is what happened to the first Comets(彗星). In order to test the structure of the plane, it is lowered into a huge tank of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has cracked. This part will be made stronger.

The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flight in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. He takes the plane up very high. Then he shuts the engines off. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot's job to find out how he gets control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

(1)The purpose of the tank test is to find out ________.

[ ]

A.how much air can be pumped into a plane

B.how much air passengers need to breathe at certain altitudes

C.what would happen if the plane crashed in the water

D.if there are any weak parts in the plane that would burst under pressure

(2)The test is carried out under water because ________.

[ ]

A.the pressure of water is greater than air

B.the first Comets crashed in the water

C.there is less damage when the explosion happens under water

D.this is the only way engineers can find out which part has cracked

(3)Why the second important test which the author refers to is mast dangerous one is probably that ________.

[ ]

A.the metal structure of the plane is not very strong

B.the new plane will explode in the sky

C.the test pilot does not know how to get control of the plane

D.the plane begins to fall like a stone

(4)This passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.the plane structure

B.the first Comets

C.the way of pumping air into the plane

D.two important tests
