Most people watching Jeremy Lin these past two months saw Jeremy Lin, New York Knicks star; but I, watching him, saw someone else. That was my elder brother, Bob, who is athletic and energetic. He could never sit still when he was in second grade; he had to get up every now and then and run around the room. And sure enough, he grew up to be a starting player for an N.C.A.A. championship lacrosse(长曲棍球)team. He was a Nike-endorsed marathoner, too, and reached the top of Mt. Everest, unguided, in his 50s.
And yet my family never watched his lacrosse games. We did watch some of his marathons, but that wasn’t until he was in his 20s. When Bob was in his glory days, our Shanghainese-born parents were bent on getting him into medical school. There was a loving aspect to it: I can remember my father working through math books with him, lesson by lesson, at the big blackboard in the attic. Bob never did become a doctor, though; and neither did I. It wasn’t until my younger sister came along that someone in the family finally wore a white coat.
Bob today could be the fittest 58-year-old on the planet. His doctor estimates his biological age at 35; he’s still climbing big mountains in the Himalayas. And, like Jeremy Lin, he’s charming. No one sees Bob without leaving with a laugh. He sometimes jokes he could be mayor of his building, and it’s true. To know him is to cheer for him.
And yet my parents did not cheer for him. What if my mother had sat on the sidelines with her statistics, like Jeremy Lin’s mother? What if my father had played videos of athletes for my brother to watch and imitate? It’s hard not to wonder.
And how did Jeremy Lin’s parents manage to do these remarkable things? Amy Chua, the tiger mother, recalls her immigrant father beating the kids whenever they mispronounced a Chinese word. How is it that Jeremy Lin’s immigrant father in particular, Gie-Ming Lin, encouraged his son to follow such an untraditional path?

E
People often ask me how, as a man, I became so devoted to improving the quality of women’s lives.  It wasn’t until age forty that I realized what had started me down my career path.
One morning more than thirty-seven years ago, I was awakened by the passing school bus.  I was thirteen years old, living at home with my two younger brothers and our mother, Doris Joy Heavin.  She had just passed her fortieth birthday.  She was a mother of five children and had suffered emotional and physical problems most of her life.  Her doctor had tried various treatments on her with little benefit.
As I awoke to the sound of the passing school bus, my brother Paul came in and told me that I’d better come quickly because mother was sick.  As I knelt beside her bed, I could feel the absence of warmth.  I put my arms around her, first to feel for a sign of life, and then as a final hug.  I took my younger brothers, aged eight and nine, in my arms and gently told them that our mother was in heaven.
Her death was unnecessary.  The high blood pressure causing the blood clot(血栓) that took her life was unnecessary.  Rather than medicate the symptoms, she could have dealt with the cause of her high blood pressure: we now know that exercise and proper nutrition will almost always reduce the causes of high blood pressure and most other chronic(慢性的) diseases.
Many years later, while teaching a fitness and weight loss class to a group of about eighty women, I realized I was subconsciously(下意识地) searching the crowd for the face of my mother.

A.His mother’s illness and death.
B.The early loss of both his parents.
C.His support to the rights of women.
D.His knowledge of high blood pressure.
59.From the passage we learn that ________ .
A.the author was the oldest child in his family
B.the author’s father died long before his mother
C.high blood pressure is a kind of chronic disease
D.many women were found with blood clot at the time
60.Why did the author think his mother’s death was unnecessary?
A.Because her blood clot wasn’t a deadly disease at the time.
B.Because his mother wouldn’t have died if she had a job.
C.Because her high blood pressure could have been prevented.
D.Because his mother was not treated in the local hospital.

第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2,满分40分)
A
When he thought of the past,my grandfather would sometimes show us photographs of himself at school. They were brown and faded, and it was hard to believe that the blurred figure of the little boy in the short trousers and socks could ever have been Grandfather. Besides,he wore a cap---andthe boys in the photographs wore caps pulled so far forward that half of their faces were obscured. When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group,we would surely point to the wrong boy.
On one such occasion my younger sister, aged six, burst into tears when Grandfather proudly guided her finger to the right boy. "How could that boy be you?"she cried. "He should have a beard.” We were,of course, all convinced that grandfathers should have beards ,preferably white and bushy, like  our owngrandfather's.
"I wasa good scholar ,”Grandfather would say, wagging his beard over the photographs."I should have been top of the c1ass if I hadn't had to get up at six every morning to milk the cows and chop the wood, and again when I came home from school.”
"But Saturdays? What did you do on Saturdays?"
"Saturdays,if it was fine, I’d be out all day in the fields with the men,"replied Grandfather."And if it was wet,I’d be helping my mother with odd jobs round the house. There wasn't much time for studying."
We all tried hard to imagine what it would have been like to have been Grandfather getting up at crack of dawn and never, obviously, having amoment for himself. It seemed we had learnt something from what Grandfather had said about his childhood.

D.she found Grandfather in the photographsdid not have a beard

A if he had had more time for studying, hewould have been the best in his class

He lost his arms in an accident that cost his father the life. Since then, he’s had to depend on the arms of his younger brother. To take care of him, his younger brother became his shadow, never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes, he was completely unable to do anything in his life.

One late night, he felt bad and had to wake up his younger brother. His younger brother accompanied him into the toilet and then went back to the dorm to wait. But being so tired, his younger brother fell asleep, leaving him three hours till the teacher on duty discovered him. As they grew up, they would have their share of problems. Then one day, his younger brother wanted to live his own life, which made him heart-broken.

A similar misfortune befell a girl. One night her mother, who suffered from mental illness,  disappeared. Her father went out looking for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for them, only to overturn the lamp on the stove, resulting in a fire which took her hands away.

Though her elder sister, who was studying in another city, showed her willingness to look after her, she was determined to be completely independent. At school, she always studied hard and learned to be independent. She wrote in her composition: “Though I lost my arms, I still have legs; I’m lucky.”

One day, the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. They both were asked to write something on a piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote: My younger brother’s arms are my arms; while the girl wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.

It is true that misfortune can strike at any time. If you choose only to complain and escape, it will always follow you wherever you go. But if you decided to be strong, the hardship will turn out to be a fortune on which new hopes will arise.

Which is the best title of this passage?

   A. Help Those in Need

   B. Broken Wings, Flying Heart

   C. Life, Often Unfair, Is Compared to Voyage

   B. The girl had a devoted sister while the boy’s brother refused to help him.

   C. The girl chose to be challenged while the boy chose to give in.
