Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education is the formal(正规的)teaching and care of young children. It primarily focuses on learning through playing to encourage the child's different kinds of development. 1

Studies with Head Start programs throughout the United States have shown some evidence that there are quite a few advantages to early childhood education, which can produce significant gains in children's learning and development.Compared to a child who does not attend pre-school, children completing their early education programs are found to be better at math and reading skills. They are excited to learn and have the tools to do so. 2 These children are more competent in their pre-school, kindergarten and school-age years, and they are usually reported as “friendlier” by parents and the children's peers(同伴).

3 In studies with matched control groups, more students who had early schooling experiences were employed at the age of 19, fewer were on welfare, and fewer were involved with the criminal activity. What's more, some studies show that children attending pre-school are more likely to graduate and have higher education, and be well integrated(综合)as an adult.

Early childhood education gives most children a jump-start on education for their kindergarten and primary school years. It is clear that early childhood education can have some great benefits for children. 4 If early childhood education is less effective, perhaps the best model is finding strategies for allowing a parent to stay home with his or her child for at least the first two to three years. Also important is considering a child's own personality. 5

A.The long-term influence of early education is significant as well.

B.They can benefit greatly from encouragement in their early childhood.

C.Yet its quality must be assessed to see what kind of benefits it actually provides.

D.They are also able to relate to others in a superior way and that improves their social skills.

E.Many experts of education have concerned about what early childhood education means today.

F.Individual differences in children mean that not all children will get equal benefits from early childhood education.

G.It consists of activities that serve children in the pre-school years and is designed to improve later school performance.

Is bottled water better for you than tap? Or should you choose vitamin-enriched water? Experts say, skip it all.None of these products is likely to make you any healthier.Below, we look at four major myths about the benefits of drinking water. 1 Experts say there’s an easy way to judge. If you are not thirsty, your fluid intake is likely “just right”

Myth No 1:Drink eight glasses each day.

Scientists say there’s no clear health benefit of drinking so much water a day. 2 “Nobody really knows,” says Dr.Stanley Goldfarb, a kidney expert at the University of Pennsylvania.

Myth No.2:Lots of water equals healthier skin.

The body is already 60 percent water. 3 Adding a few extra glasses of water each day has a limited effect.“It’s such a tiny part of what’s in the body,” says Goldfarb.“ It’s very unlikely that one’s getting any benefit.”

  Myth No.3: 4

A more accurate statement may be:Drinking water is a helpful tool for dieters.“Water is a great strategy for dieters because it has no calories,” says Madeline Fernstrom of the University of Pittsburgh.“So you can keep your mouth busy without food and get a sense of satisfaction.” But water is not magical, she adds.“Other zero-calorie options such as diet sodas are fine, too.”

Myth No.4:It’s easy to get dehydrated(脱水的)during a workout.

Dehydration sets in when a person has lost 2 percent of his or her body weight. 5 “It’s also obvious that individuals in hot, dry climates have an increased need for water,” says Goldfarb.“But for a walk in the park, no water bottle is necessary.”

A.So where does the standard advice come from?

B.But it’s unclear whether these changes are clinically significant.

C.So for a 200-pound man, this means losing 4 pounds of water.

D.Drinking extra water leads to weight loss.

E.Drink as much water as you can.

F.So, if you take a 200-pound man, he’s 120 pounds of water.

G.But first, how do you know if you’re drinking enough water?

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen’s work. 66   What they look for is your patience—to talk, to cry, or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express her worries and fears, but don’t let them focus on those fears.

Help them get organized. 67  Together, you and your teen can work out a timetable in which she can study for what she knows will be on the test.

Provide a calm setting. Help your teen set up a quiet place to study and protect her privacy. Give them a nutritious diet. It is important for your teen to eat a healthy, balanced diet during exam times to focus and do her best. 68  If this happens, encourage your teen to eat light meals or sandwiches.

69   Persuade your teenager to get some sleep and/or do something active when she needs a real break from studying. Help your teen balance her time so that she will feel comfortable taking time out from studying to spend time with friends or rest.

Show a positive attitude. 70   Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen’s pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for her efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.

  A. Encourage your teen to relax.

  B. The best thing is simply to be there.

  C. They will only make the situation worse.

  D. Exam stress can make some teens lose their appetite (食欲).

  E. A parent’s attitude will affect their teen’s emotions.

  F. Your teen may also make negative comments about themselves.

G. Help your teen think about what she has to study and plan accordingly.
