In Singapore, most of us love window-shopping while some others enjoy having a picnic at East Coast Park or Changi Beach on sunny days. Singaporeans are never bothered by the occasional thunderstorm. However, we know that if it rains for long continuous periods, there will be more serious effects. Just recently the main shopping street of Orchard Road was flooded and some part of Bukit Timah was impassable to traffic. People reacted by writing in to the newspaper to complain about this! We forget that other countries suffer much worse effects. Elsewhere, heavy tropical(热带的)storms often result in floods that ruin crops especially in Thailand and Malaysia. This in turn usually means that the price of rice and vegetables here in Singapore will rise because we import these products from them. If there is a typhoon or tsunami, thousands of lives are lost too. This happened in Indonesia and Phuket in Thailand in 2004 and it serves to remind us of how Mother Nature can cause great damage.
Weather patterns in general have changed dramatically in recent years. Scientists believe that global warming and the resulting melting of the polar ice-cap has caused the level of the ocean to rise. This in turn causes flooding of low-lying areas in countries where the land is rather flat and some parts of which is below water level. It is believed that human activities have caused Mother Nature to show her extreme anger, so it is now important that we really work together to cut down on harmful activities, for example, illegal logging(伐木)or irresponsible forest-burning to clear land for farming.

A. Read on B. Read loudly C. Select a proper material D. Think while you are reading E. Use a dictionary at a right time F. Five suggestions for achieving better results. |
Effective reading should adopt a correct way, and then you can get more by paying less. Here are some suggestions for reading effectively.
1.
Don’t choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read. A book full of new words will make you discouraged quickly. To understand these new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often. It seems that you are not reading the book but the dictionary. It has no fun at all! On the contrary, a too easy one will only waste your time and cannot do any help. The two extremes may at last make you give up reading. So it’s better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page.
2.
If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible. Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text. This ability is quite necessary in reading. If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success”, and your interest in reading is well stimulated. If a word really hinders you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then. I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for “its troublesome image”.
3.
To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then form your own ideas on some special issues. Try to scribble (乱写;潦草地书写)some lines — a very short journal, to express your ideas. Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive. This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors. Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing.
4.
Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English. Don’t merely take English as a “test”. Take it as an “entertainment” instead and you will enjoy it through learning. Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read, if you like. Try to read them as loudly and passionately as you can. During this process, not only can you enjoy yourself by the great emotions of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved.
5.
The last but not the least, keep on reading. If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining.

People have expressed themselves thrugh the movements, steps, and rhythms of dance since the beginning of time. They have prayed and celebrated their victories through dance. People have mourned their dead and healed their sick through dance, the language of the body.
|
Today there are many kinds of dancing. For example, there is folk dancing, ballet dancing, and modern dancing. Modern dance, which began in the early 1900s, is a very expressionistic dance. Modern dancers follow no set pattern. Rather, they create their own movements to match the feeling they are trying to express. But modern dance means more than just selt-expression.
|
Martha Graham is one of the world’s greatest modern dancers. As a young dancer, she studied with some of the founders of the modern dance movement. Influnced by many different kinds of dancing, Martha Graham developed her own personal dance style. She later formed her own dance company and school in the New York City. The following are some of her feelings about her art.
|
The modern dancer’s costume is an important part of his or her dance. There is always some reason why a dance costume should be a certain color or an outfit cut in a certain way. The reason comes out of the dance itself. Unlike a ballet costume, a modern dance costume is left of the dancers’ art except the pictures and the memories.
|
Dances come from something deep within a person. That something cannot be expressed with words--- it must be told through movement. Because dance expresses emotions, it affects the mind and the body. Dance should not be taken apart interpreted-dance must be experienced.

A.Get moving B.Start with soup C.Take a warm bath D.Spend time being social E.How to warm you right up F.Ways to stay warm in winter |
61. 。
At the first signs of oncoming winter, many of us look for any excuse we can get to stay in bed. But hibernating(冬眠)indoors isn't the only way to stay warm– here are far healthier ways to heat up, many of which even come with added health benefits.
62. 。
Spending time socializing could make you feel physically warmer than being alone. A study conducted by the University of Toronto researchers found that social absence literally feels cold. So despite the cold temperatures and the temptation to hibernate, make an effort to spend some time with your friends or partners.
63. 。
Make an effort to exercise and you'll get benefits and maintain a healthy weight. Moving will increase blood circulation throughout your body, which can help you stay focused, handle stressful situations and, of course, warm up. That's because when it's cold out, circulation in parts of the body, like the fingers, decreases, which is why those extremities(四肢)are often the first to feel cold when the temperature drops.
64. 。
Like tea, a hot soup can warm you from the inside out. But it could do more than help you heat up – soup is filling, which means it could help if you’re trying to cut calories. A 2007 Pennsylvania State study found that participants who first ate soup before their lunch main dish reduced their calorie intake by 20 percent, compared to the soup-less people. Start with a fiber-filled soup to cut your calorie-intake and warm up.
65. 。
Escape the cold with a warm soak in the tub – and sleep better, too. That’s because our body temperatures naturally cool down around the time we should go to sleep. Health.com reports that taking a nice warm bath a couple hours before bedtime can raise your body temperature. Soak your tension away and help you feel more relaxed.
