　　More and more people sit for a long time every day．But experts are increasingly warning that it could be bad for their health．And it doesn't matter where the sitting takes place－at the office, in the car or before a computer or TV－just the overall number of hours it occurs．Several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die．

　　Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggested that health officials rethink how they define physical activity to highlight the dangers of sitting．While health officials have issued guidelines recommending minimum amounts of physical activity, they haven't sggested people try to limit how much time they spend in a seated position．"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals，" Ekblom-Bak said．

　　However, some people argued that if they spent long stretches of time sitting but used their spare time to exercise, everything would be OK．Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert, didn't agree and said they might get more benefit if that exercise was spread across the day, rather than in a single activity．

　　In a study that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether or not they exercised．"We don't have enough evidence yet to say how much sitting is bad，" said Peter Katzmarzyk who led the Canadian study．"But it seems the more you can get up and interrupt this seated behavior, the better．"

　　Figures from a US survey found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from working at their desks to sitting in cars．"People should keep exercising because that has a lot of benefit，" Ekblom-Bak said．"But when they're in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often as possible，" she said．

　　Each year about a quarter of a million Americans study abroad．For many of them, a summer or a semester in a foreign country now involves more than just sitting in classrooms and hanging out with other American students．Instead, they are encouraged and sometimes required to be involved in the local communities they are studying in．

　　“It's absolutely important that they know something about how people in other parts of the world live and think, and how they behave,” says William Finlay, head of the sociology department at the University of Georgia．In 2008, he co-founded a study abroad program with South Africa's Stellenbosch University．It combines traditional academic in-class learning with community involvement．

　　“We've been working with a non-government organization in the township．Our students typically either work with little children in day care centers or work in the library and teach very basic computer skills to young children,” says Finlay．

　　The three-week program proved to be an unforgettable experience for Hillary Kinsey．She says, “It was interesting to learn the history of the area and then talk to these people and see what the social dynamics were, and how certain groups felt about other groups．”

　　When Hillary Kinsey returned home from South Africa, she and other students in the program established a non-profit group．Kinsey says the group wants to contribute to advancing education and development in South Africa．“One of the purposes of the group is that we hope to raise money and awareness about the situation where those people live and help to promote any sort of educational development that we can, ” Kinsey added．

　　While many study abroad programs focus on helping Americans to learn foreign languages, others take a more intensive approach．“In all of our locations, we place students with local roommates,” says Mark Lenhart, director of CEF Academic Programs, which sends more than a thousand students to China, Korea and other countries each year．

　　He says American students benefit from such one-on-one interactions, in spite of the challenges they face．Lenhart says, “They have to adjust to the local life．This will enable students to become more employable when they graduate．”

As more Americans go to mainland China to take jobs，more Chinese and Americans are

working side by side．These cross—cultural partnerships，while beneficial in many ways，are

also highlighting tensions that expose differences in work experience，pay levels and communication．

In the last few years，a growing number of Americans in their 20s and 30s have been heading

to China for employment，attracted by its faster-growing economy and lower jobless rate．Their Chinese co-workers are often around the same age．But the two groups were raised differently．The Americans have had more exposure to free-market principles．“Young Americans were brought up in a commercial environment，” said Neng Zhao，28，a senior associate at Blue Oak Capital，a private firm based in Beijing．“We weren't．So the workplace is a unique learning process for my generation．”

Managers hiring workers in China appear to be paying for Western experience．Foreigners tend to earn 10 to 15 percent more than their Chinese counterparts （persons working in similar positions），said Michael Norman，senior vice president at Sibson Consulting，an American firm．That imbalance does not go unnoticed by Chinese workers．“There is definitely the belief that Americans get paid more for the same work，”said Ting Wang，25，an associate at Wild China，a travel company based in Beijing．On the other hand，Chinese workers have a deeper understanding of the influences，like．Confucianism and Communism，which play a part in their country’s culture and economy．

It is important and necessary for Americans working in China to adjust，said Mr．Norman，who works on management and work force issues for multinational companies operating in Asia．
