I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1994, but I can remember my mother’s words as if it were yesterday: “Kerrel, I don’t want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him.”

AIDS wasn’t something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father’s other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look after him.

We couldn’t afford all the necessary medication for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no money for school supplies and often couldn’t even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost, the teacher’s words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.

I did not share my burden (负担) with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside table even though he was too weak to feed himself.

I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret. I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless, I called a woman at the non-profit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.

I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken about AIDS to anyone, even me. He didn’t want to call attention to AIDS. I do.

   A. Kerrel couldn’t understand her teacher.

   C. Kerrel was too troubled to focus on the lesson.

   D. Kerrel was too tired to bear her teacher’s words.

3.Why did Kerrel keep her father’s disease a secret?

   A. She was afraid of being looked down upon.

   B. She thought it was shameful to have AIDS.

   C. She found no one willing to listen to her.

   D. She wanted to obey her mother.

4.Why did Kerrel write the passage?

   A. To tell people about the sufferings of her father.

   B. To show how little people knew about AIDS.

   C. To draw people’s attention to AIDS.

Talking to Teachers—Teachers are just people.Behind that desk, is a living, breathing human being. And just like any human being, they will probably be friendly to people who talk nicely to them.Teachers also seem to get along better with children who take schoolwork seriously and are prepared for class. And, just like any other human being, teachers like to be appreciated. The next time your teacher helps you solve a math problem or figure out a science project, say thank you with a smile.

Talking to Parents—Parents can be very supportive if their children ask for help.If you think there’s something your parents can do to help you socialize more or feel more comfortable around people, then ask them.Very often, parents want very much to help, but really don’t know what to do.Pick a quiet time of the day and ask to talk.Tell them how you feel.Maybe they had the same trouble when they were kids.

This Stranger Thing—This is always a tough one.How do you deal with a neighbor, the mail carrier, or someone walking down your street—situations that often seem to cause arguments between kids and parents. The answer to these questions will vary from kid to kid, from parent to parent because all cultures are different. Some folks live in small towns where a hello to everyone is “what’s done”.Then there are kids who live in the city who may have been taught not to speak to anyone they don’t know.If you’re having trouble with this and always feel awkward in these kinds of situations, you might want to talk to your parents or a teacher about it.Where do they think you should draw the line? When is silence rude and when is it wise?

"I've changed my mind.I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back." Lucien Lawrence's letter to Father Christmas, written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gale, must have touched every heart.Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn't see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stare for a while.

But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart.I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than 1 ever did when they were alive.I still live to please them and I'm still surprised by their reactions.I remember that when I became a professor,! was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn't wait to call my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all Mother said was "I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!" I haven't forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.

It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care.Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors (挑衅者), and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas'' It's a serious thought, one to give me pause.

I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet " Deliver my soul from the sword(剑), and my darling from the power of the dog." Yet I know the death comes to us all,

and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die

tomorrow. We live on, I'm sure, in the lives of those we loved.and therefore we ought to have a care

for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to

be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.
