Getting paid to talk about the World Cup is a great job. I' m not a football commentator (评论员), though --just an English teacher in Japan.

I came to Japan two years ago, and did’t think I would stay, but Japan has that effect on you. People often end up living here longer than they planned. I think it' s best to teach, in a bigger city where there are other foreigners to mix with, rather than a small town where English teachers often complain of feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. Many people choose to live in Tokyo, of course, which is good for tile nightlife factor. But I' d say that for general quality of living, cities of neither too large nor too small, like Sapporo where I live, are better choices.

I teach English privately, which means I' m my own boss. If you want to devote yourself to private teaching, it's well worth doing a TEFL course first, because your lessons will be much better for it. The problem with private teaching is finding students; it took me a year to build up a full schedule (日程表) of private lessons, so I started out teaching in schools part-time.

Most of my foreign friends here work full-time for big English conversation schools. The salary is fine to live on, but whether you can save money depends on how much going out and traveling you do here.

The schools are reluctant to take time off -- even teachers with tickets for the England-Argentina game had trouble getting the day off.

  A. there are many foreigners in Japan

  B. Japan is good for nightlife

  C. they can teach English privately in Japan

  D. Japan has something more attractive than expected

  A. kind         B. unwilling          C. free           D. careless

Dear Bridge of Hope supporters,
July 2010 was a productive month for the teachers at BOH. Marilyn traveled to Liberia and helped Kathleen Ngenda with her teacher training program on Basic Adult Literacy. During the eight-day training, she helped the teachers learn to pronounce, spell and write correctly. They are currently working on personal sets of cards and lists so that they can teach this concept to students in the fall. Kathleen plans on two trips back to the school to monitor teachers in their teaching.
Marilyn found a very dedicated (投入的)and enthusiastic group of elementary teachers who are focused on bettering themselves as educators. BOHUSA will offer financial support for their further educational studies this fall. Our goal is to have all staff be certified by the end of 2013.
The Liberian government recommends a C-certificate for teachers of elementary students, which can be obtained in one year of education classes (taken on Saturdays).
There is a great need to add seventh and eighth grade classrooms and a library. There is actually no room, however, and so we need to add a second floor. Currently the ground floor houses the church and the school uses this space for daily services. The first floor would give space for three more classrooms, in addition to a large reading room and computer labs. About $40,000 to 50,000 is required to meet the educational needs.
If you would like to contribute to this building project, please make out your check to:

Arrive Early
Plan your trip so that you’re at the venue(place) well before the scheduled start of the event. Gates open one to two hours before the start of competition at city and Whistler venues. Gates open four hours prior to the start of the Opening Ceremony, three hours prior to the start of the Closing Ceremony and two hours prior to the start of the Victory Ceremonies.

All venues have been reviewed for accessibility. If you have a specific need, see the nearest staff member for assistance.

  1.     If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and your ability to focus will increase. But if you never use your brain, or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to think and learn will decrease. Here are some simple ways that may help you.

    2.

Don’t you feel drained(劳累) after a couple of hours of watching TV? Your eyes are sore and tired of being focused on the light box for so long. When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.

Exercise.

I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead.     3.     It improves productivity(生产力) during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you can concentrate(专注) more easily.

Read challenging books.

If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability, you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more elegant English.    4.     Re-read it when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed(习惯) to the author’s style.

Early to bed, early to rise.

     5.     You’ll be the most energetic if you go to bed early and don’t sleep for more than 8 hours. In my experience the early morning hours are the most productive. If you have the opportunity, take a 10-20 minute nap(小憩) when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness(睡意).

A. Take a time to reflect.

B. Reduce television watching.

C. Spending some time alone will be helpful.
