Recently I took part in an English speech contest and successfully went into the final. That day, I thought I had done a good job. At that moment I even had a strong feeling of being the champion. But my dream was soon shattered when my final score was announced. I stood in the hall, feeling empty-minded and puzzled. My memory went back to when I was in junior middle school. I took part in a similar speech contest. I was too proud of myself. I was not well prepared, so it ended up as a total failure. But this time should be different! I never knew a few words and a kind smile could be so inspiring that I suddenly realized that frustration, sorrow, happiness and inspiration are treasures to make life more meaningful. An Internet war of words is violent between China’s younger generations---the 1980s and the 1990s---commonly known as the “Strawberries” and the “Jellies”. It’s about values and identity, who’s patriotic and responsible, who’s spoiled.

The Strawberries see the Jellies as “self-centered and irresponsible, materialistic, spoiled kids.” while the Jellies see the Strawberries as “out-of-date.”

Retired English teacher Paul Wang has taught both the 1980s and 1990s students and worries more about kids the latter. “I worry more about the 1990s, because kids from the 1980s, although naughty and rebellious, would still listen to teachers, if not fear teachers. They have different opinions and would argue with me, but there was still respect.” Kids today are different, says Wang. “They know your salary, they know that you won’t criticize them and many of them don’t respect us any more.”

Since the earthquake on May 12th, media have shown a greater appreciation of the 1980s generation. “ We used to feel disappointed about the 1980s, but they showed unbelievable courage and energy after the earthquake and proved they are patriotic and responsible enough to support this nation. However, the 1990s generation is listless. They don’t know what they want because they have everything. They don’t care about anything else except themselves.”

Most people will say that the several important qualities of a teacher are that he should love his students, that he needs to have an expert knowledge of his subject, and that he should devote himself to his jobs whole – heartedly. All of these can be the good qualities of a teacher but not all.

As we all know, it is impossible for a teacher to love every one of his students that he teaches in his life. Teachers must try their best to make most of their students interested in the subject so that they are able to teach themselves in the future. This requires teachers to master many teaching skills, which include how to control a class and so on. Teachers have to spend much time and energy on their work. Halloween is very popular in western countries. On October 31st, dozens of children dressed in costumes（节日服装）knock on their neighbors' doors and yell "Trick or Treat" when the door opens. Pirates and princesses, ghosts and popular heroes of the day all hold bags open to catch the candy or other goodies that the neighbors drop in. As they give each child a treat the neighbors exclaim over the costumes and try to guess who is under the masks.

Today school dances and neighborhood parties called "block parties" are popular among the young and the old. More and more adults celebrate Halloween. They dress up like historical or political figures and go to masquerade parties（化妆舞会). In larger cities, costumed children and their parents gather at shopping malls early in the evening.
