摘要: It can be inferred that the following paragraph of the passage will talk about . A. how Paula and Elyse found each other B. how Paula and Elyse were separated when young C. what their mothers were like D. their mixed feelings when they saw each other C Tess still stood hesitating like a swimmer about to make his dive, hardly knowing whether to return or move forward, when a figure came out from the dark door of the tent. It was a tall young man, smoking. He had an almost black face, though red and smooth. His moustache was black with curled points, though he could not be more than twenty three or-four. There was an unusual force in his face, and in his daring rolling eyes. “Well, my beauty, what can I do for you? said he, coming forward. And seeing that she was quite at a loss, “Never mind me. I am Mr. d’Urberville. Have you come to see me or my mother? This differed greatly from what Tess had expected. She had dreamed of an aged and dignified face. She tried to keep calm and answered- “I came to see your mother, sir. “I am afraid you cannot see her-she is ill in bed, replied the representative of the house; for this was Mr. Alee, the only son of the noble family. “What is the business you wish to see her about? “It isn’t business-it is-I can hardly say what! “Pleasure? “Oh no. Why, sir, if I tell you, it will seem- Tess’s sense of a certain ridicule was now so strong that, despite her general discomfort at being here, her rosy lips curved towards a smile, much to the attraction of the young man. “It is so foolish , she stammered. “I fear I can’t tell you! “Never mind; I like foolish things. Try again, my dear, said he kindly. “Mother asked me to come, Tess continued; “and, indeed, I was in the mind to do so myself. But I did not think it would be like this. I came, sir, to tell you that we are of the same family as you. “Ho! Poor relations? “Yes. “Stokes? “No; d'Urbervilles. “Ay, ay; I mean d'Urbervilles. “Our names are worn away to Durbeyfield; but we have several proofs that we are d'Urbervilles. The local scholars hold the view that we are, and-and we have an old seal and a silver spoon marked with the same castle as yours. So mother said we ought to make ourselves known to you, as we’ve lost our horse by a bad accident; we can hardly make a living. “Very kind of your mother, I’m sure. Alec looked at Tess as he spoke, in a way that made her uneasy. “And so, my pretty girl, you’ve come on a friendly visit to us, as relations? “I suppose I have, looking less confident and uncomfortable again. “Well-there’s no harm in it. Where do you live? What are you? --Tess of the d'Urbervilles By Thomas Hardy

Mark was walking home from school one day when he noticed the boy ahead of him had stumbled over something and dropped all of the books he was carrying along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a small tape recorder. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles. Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden. Does your pet have a slim figure? According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention(APOP), about half of all dogs and nearly 60% of all indoor cats are overweight.Larry Kornegay, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, says he sees an overweight pet nearly every day, and unusually the owner is overweight. So talking about the topic can be touchy.“I talk about their pet’s health.Still, some clients take it personally.”

Here are some tips for pet weight loss:

See the vet(兽医).Have your vet put together a plan and treat any existing medical problems.Pain relief and diet changes may be required for arthritic(患关节炎的)pets, which will allow for exercise to at least begin.

Skip the crash diet(an attempt to lose weight quickly by strictly limiting the diet).A special weight-loss diet may be suggested. For example, look for the supplement which burns fat and builds muscle mass in foods.Never place any pet on a crash diet, especially cats, which can suffer a potentially fatal liver disease as a result. There’s a safe weight-loss drug for dogs you can ask your vet about.

Dine alone.“Cut out treats and resist temptation by keeping pets out of the room you’re dining in,” says Chicago vet Sheldon Rubin. You can buy low-calorie treats for dogs and cats.Rubin also recommends mini carrots, small apple slices or blueberries for dogs. What’s important is finding other ways, aside from food, to show your love.Play with your cat using an interactive toy, and take your dog for walks.Walks are great for bonding, and good for you.Studies show people are actually more willing to lose weight themselves if it also will help their pet.

Feed pets at special times.Pre-measure food carefully-don’t give them a larger meal than ever-and leave it in various places, so pets sniff it out and use the stairs. It’s fun, and it’s good exercise.

Every Christmas the giant tree in Rockefeller Center sparkles with thousands of lights. From the beginning, when construction workers raised the first one during the depths of the Depression, it has been a symbol of hope. Diana Abad, like most Americans, loved that tree.

In 1999, however, Diana was writing her will. The 33-year-old woman from Staten Island, New York, was diagnosed with leukemia(白血病)and wanted to put her things in order. Doctors told her she had nine months to live.

Her slim chance for survival lay in finding a bone marrow(骨髓)donor. The most likely source for a match is always among relatives -- but her family was tested and there was none.

Then one day in February 2000, she got a call from the hospital saying that out of the four million people enrolled in the National Marrow Donor Program Registry, there was only one match. The potential donor was thinking about it. In March the donor agreed, and the transplant procedure was scheduled for March 27.

On that day, a doctor came in with the marrow in a bag, and Diana remembers him saying: “This is it. If it doesn’t graft within four to six hours, nothing will bring you back.” Diana asked a priest (牧师)to give her last rite(祈祷).

Almost immediately after the two-hour procedure, she felt stronger. Doctors told her it looked like the graft had taken.

Donors are anonymous, but when she was better, Diana sent a note through the Registry: “You don’t know the joy that I am experiencing,” she wrote. “I hope that one day we can meet and I can thank you in person.”

It was several months before the donor replied. At first he didn’t even give his name. He was 34-year-old David Mason, and he lived in Dedham, Massachusetts. But eventually the two exchanged phone numbers and began to talk.

Then unexpectedly and unannounced, he turned up at her door in Englishtown, New Jersey, on December 23. She says it was love at first sight. He says he didn’t feel it until they met the second time.

That meeting began a long-distance romance that culminated(修成正果)under the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center in December 2004. That’s where David proposed(求婚)to Diana. She, of course, said yes.
