When I was at University I studied very hard. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams. Others didn’t do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time playing than working in the library.

Once at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. Beside each question we had to write “True” or “False”. While I was studying in my room the night before the test, Fred was watching TV. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Thenhe told me of his plan. “It’s very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. I’ll just toss(掷)the coin to decide the answers. That way, I’m sure I’ll get half the questions right.”

The next day, Fred came happily into the exam room. As he sat tossing a coin for half an hour he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.

The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor. “Oh, good,” he said to the teacher, “Have you got the result of the test?” The teacher reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.

“I’m terribly sorry, Fred,” he said, “You failed!”

A.did just enough to pass an exam

B.didn’t work hard enough for their studies

D.were quite good at passing exams

3.Fred came happily into the exam room because          .

A.he had got ready for the exam

B.he knew the answers already

C.one excellent student would help him

D.he had his special way to finish the exam

4.Which of the following about the chemistry exam is TRUE?

A.The chemisty exam was not very difficult at all.

B.It in fact took an hour to finish the chemisty exam

C.The chemisty exam had more than one hundred questions.

Ways to save time

We all wish we had just a bit more time.Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or spring-clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on.

1.   But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

         1.Get Out of Bed Earlier

If you normally get up at 7; 30 a.m.try getting up at 7:00 a.m.That half-hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book you've been meaning to finish.2.

2.Do the Important Tasks First

Once you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important tasks rather than on all those little urgent ones.

3. The urgent tasks will still get done, and you won't miss the important ones.

3.Reduce Interruptions

If colleagues have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple task like writing a letter.Constant interruptions don't just eat up time, they also break your concentration.

When you've got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemail.4. Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to strike up a conversation.

         4.  5.

A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day.

When you're working, work.If your concentration is slipping, take a proper break: go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit.And if you're facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that it's easier to deal with.

A.Stay Focused on Your Work

B.Take Breaks When Necessary

C.If you have an office door, close it.

D.If you work like this, you'll usually save time.

E.Would you want me to make your day longer?

F.I can't magically make all your days 25 hours long.

G.Or simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start.

A year ago I began training to swim the English Channel.I will be 58 years old.My friends thought I had lost my mind, and my wife was somewhat worried. The question I was asked over and over was this, “Why?”

When a student reporter at Indiana recently asked me this question, I said, “First, let me ask you a question. What are your plans for this summer?”

He replied that he was going to work in a supermarket.I didn’t have to say more.He understood my point.

A challenge and something of an adventure are welcome whether you are 20 or 58, and preparing to swim the Channel is far better than working in a supermarket, especially when you have a choice.

But why did I decide to swim the Channel at 58?Perhaps I myself can hardly give a satisfactory answer.

The Channel has always been the greatest challenge to swimmers, a test of ability, luck, and even bravery. It is this challenge that attracts about 100 swimmers a year, who are willing to spend time, effort, and money trying it.

One fact that adds to my interest is that, if I succeed, I will be the oldest person ever to swim the Channel.

I don’t think I am a superman.I do think I have at least two things in favor:

  First, I am training hard-now swimming 7 and a half miles a day.Second, I am a resolute(有决心的)man.Once I set up a goal, I won’t give it up easily.And this swim has long been a goal.I have a feeling-I will be mentally ready.

On the other hand there was a young girl who was attempting(试图)to finish her swim when the ocean got rough. She was having a hard time with the rough and cold water, when her trainer shouted to her from the boat that he thought she should give up and get out of the water. She shouted back, “I’m doing the swimming, and I’ll decide when to get out.” She made it.

(1)

[ ]

B.

he understood I did not like his question and did not want to answer it

C.

[ ]

A.

she reached her goal

B.

she proved she was right

C.

she made a good show of her courage and bravery

D.

she set a good example for others to follow

(3)

[ ]

A.

does not fully realize the difficulties he may meet with

B.

has made a bet(打赌)that he could do so

A.
