In ancient Greece the most famous festival for athletes was the Olympic Games. These games took their name from the religious(宗教信仰的)centre of Olympus, in southern Greece. The Games were held every four years at the end of June.Athletes, judges and spectators came from all over the known world to watch and compete.

After a solemn(神圣的)opening ceremony, the first event was the four-horse chariot(战车)race. As many as forty chariots thundered round and round the stadium.Because of collisions(碰撞),and the strain of covering the nine-mile race, very few chariots ever finished the race.Winning it was a great honour. At the Olympic Games there were also races on foot, horse races, wrestling, boxing matches and the pentathlon

“Pente”is Greek for five and“athlon”Greek for contest, the pentathlon was five different events combined.Competitors had to run, contest the long jump, throw the discus(铁饼)and the javelin(标枪)and wrestle(摔跤).The athlete who won three of the five events was the winner. The winners each received a crown(头冠)of olive(橄槛)leaves as their prize. They went back to their cities wearing the crown. When they arrived home they were welcomed as heroes and given special honours.

Once upon a time a king, in the company of his ministers, went to the imperial garden for a walk. When he was walking around a pond, a strange idea 1 upon him and he asked, “How many buckets(桶)of water are there in the pond?” The ministers looked at each other, 2 to give an answer.

Rather 3 , the king ordered, “You have three days’ grace.Any one who offers an answer will be handsomely awarded. Those who fail will be 4 .

The time limit was due in the twinkling(闪烁)of an eye, yet the ministers were still at their wit’s end.At this time a child appeared who declared that he knew the answer. The king told his 5 ministers to go with the child for the measurement. To their 6 , the child refused the suggestion with a smile, “It is very easy.No 7 to go to the pond.” This made the king laugh 8 , “Alright, let us know what it is.” The child winked(眨眼)and said, “That 9 on the size of the bucket. If it is as big as the pond, there is one bucket of water; if it is half as big, two buckets; if one third as big, three buckets; if…” “Stop! That’s it.You’ve got the 10 .” The king was satisfied and the child was duly rewarded.

Why did the ministers feel it so different to settle the problem? Because they fell in a pitfall(陷阱), following a wrong way of thinking.People’s thinking often goes a habitual way-the beaten track of straightforwardness. 11 is a static(静态的)way presupposing every object definite and certain, i.e.the size of the pond and the bucket should be clearly 12 .If one of them is unknown, it will be difficult to do the measurement, let alone 13 .Why not change your mode of thought-from static to dynamic(动态的), from concrete to 14 ? If you adopt an indirect way and try to find out the proportional relation between the pond and the bucket, you’ll get an answer-flexible yet 15 to solve the problem.

Sometimes to get out of the difficulty one must change one’s way of thinking, or simply change one’s approach towards a problem.

In today's world, we rely on computers as never before. They are used for everything from ordering a pizza to running hospitals and military defense systems. Banking and credit card information is stored and accessed by computers. So what happens when a computer gets infected with a virus? One effect is that people's access to their e-mail accounts is cut off. A more serious possible consequence is that billions of dollars could be lost.

A virus is a computer program that copies itself onto other programs and infects them. Similar to an easily spread disease, a computer virus goes from computer to computer, either adding to or changing the tasks a program is designed to do.

The first computer viruses were created in the mid '80s and had varying effects. Some caused files to be deleted, or made the letters on the screen appear to fall off. Others displayed a specific message once the computer was turned on.

Viruses today are much more widespread and dangerous than ever before. Perhaps the most damaging to date has been the "I Love You" virus. "I Love You" appeared in May 2000 and has possibly been the most destructive virus in terms of monetary loss.

The virus is released when an attachment to a fake e-mail message is opened. By changing the names of files on computers, "I Love You" makes them difficult to access. It also searches for important personal information, including passwords, which it sends to a web site for others to see.

It is estimated that more than 45 million people in 20 countries have had their computers infected by the "I Love You" virus. Some say the cost of repair and lost business has been more than US$10 billion.

If you own a computer, it is important to keep it in good health by installing an anti-virus program. If updated frequently, it will protect your e-mail access--not to mention your wallet.

1.What does "virus" mean in the article?

A. An easily spread disease.

B. A contagious (传染的) computer program.

C. An extremely small organism (生物) which causes disease.

D. A parasite (寄生虫) in computer.

2. How does "I Love You" virus spread?

A. It is spread when an e-mail account is opened.

B. It is spread through on-line chatting.

C. It is spread through e-mail.

D. It spreads from web site to web site.

3. Which of the following is one of the damages brought by "I Love You" virus?

  A. It deletes files. B. It automatically turns on computers.

  C. It automatically turns off computers. D. It makes it difficult to access files.

4. Which of the following is the best way to guard against virus?

A. To load an up-to-date anti-virus program into our computer

B. Not to use an e-mail account.

C. To upgrade our computer. D. Not to use the Internet.

5. What is the purpose of the article?

A. To warn us against virus.

B. To remind us the importance of being healthy.

C. To stress the importance of computer.

D. To alert us to economic loss.
