The shy man was waiting for the girl behind a tree. She was getting ready to go to her friend's house on the other side of the woods and did not think anything would happen to her on the way. The man was waiting and thinking: “She can't be very long now.” A few minutes later she appeared at the far end of the lane (林间狭道). She could not see the man, though he could see her clearly getting ready to come out and talk on her. She came closer and closer to him.
He felt something different every moment, one moment he knew he would come out and talk to her, the next he feared that he might frighten her and make her angry. When she was practically level with the tree (与树平行), he made himself long and thin so that she did not see him as she passed by.
