Once Dr.Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases with his students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34, who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope he would live.
Dr.Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and, in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat.The patient said that he had no desire to eat.
"Are you getting food you like?"
The patient said nothing.
"Do you get the kind of food you have at home?"
The answer was no.
The doctor put his hand on the man's shoulder and his voice was very soft.
"If; you had food that you liked, would you eat it?"
"Yes, yes," the patient said.
The change in the patient's appearance couldn't have been more obvious.Nothing was said, but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and! had also been received.
Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn't getting food he could eat.One of the students said, "We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals."
"Suppose," the doctor replied, "you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn't carry it, would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request?"
"I would probably insist," the student said.
"Very well," the doctor said."You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won't be easy, but I can help you.Meanwhile, let's get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it.Or he'll be killed by hunger.By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress, we need to be able to talk with him."
Three weeks later, Doctor Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.

A.Think while you are reading B.Select a proper material C.Five suggestions for achieving better results D.Read loudly E.Read on F.Use a dictionary at a right time |
Effective reading should adopt a correct way, and then you can get more by paying less. Here are some hints for reading effectively.
1.___________
Don’t choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read.A book full of new words will make you feel discouraged quickly. To understand those new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often. It seems that you are not reading the book but the dictionary. It has no fun at all! On the contrary, a too easy one will only waste your time and cannot do any help. The two extremes may at last make you give up reading. So it’s better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page.
2._____________
If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible.Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text. This ability is quite necessary in reading. If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success”, and your interest in reading is well stimulated. If a word really hinders you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then.I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its “troublesome image.”
3.___________
To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then from your own ideas on some special issues.Try to scribble some lines-a very short journal, to express your ideas.Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive. This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors.Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing.
4._____________
Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English.Don’t merely take English as a “test”.Take it as an “entertainment” instead and you will enjoy it through learning.
Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read, if you like.Try top read them as loudly and impassionedly as you can.During this process, not only you can enjoy yourself by the great emotions of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved.
5.______________
The last but not the least, keep on reading. If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining.

With his standard Mandarin pronunciation, practiced skills on Chinese expressions and special humour with a Beijing accent, Dashan has become a household name across China.
People have always wondered how the 36-year-old Canadian can be so skillful in the Chinese language even though it is considered by many as one of the most difficult languages in the world. But to Dashan, the great challenge was a piece of cake due to his deep interest, proper method and the excellent environment he created for himself.
“Interest is the best teacher.” That is a universal principle. Even if the 20-year-old Mark Rowswell--Dashan's real name--hadn't fully realized what attracted him to the Chinese department at the University of Toronto in Canada, he was already deeply interested in Chinese culture when he decided to have further study in Beijing.
Entering the Chinese department of Peking University in 1988, Dashan felt like a duck in water. Study is always a hard job, no matter how much interest you have. Therefore, effective ways are necessary to improvement. “Learn for life and learn in life” is Dashan's belief.
As a freshman at the University of Toronto, the student did study the textbooks, which especially aimed on foreign Chinese learners. They did help him build a solid foundation.
However, that's far from enough to grasp the Chinese language. Starting in his junior year, Dashan began to read original Chinese novels, Chinese newspapers and even the selected works of Deng Xiaoping. “Only the material for Chinese native readers could give me a proper sense of the language,” he said.
The language that is the daily means of communication is the principle that Dashan always keeps in his mind. What you have really learned depends on what you can use, not necessarily your mastery of textbooks.
To learn in daily life requires a favorable language environment, which is also necessary for improvement. Dashan admits it is hard for Chinese English learners to be brought into a good English speaking environment, but insists, “to listen and speak as much as possible does help.”
To help Chinese English learners develop a favourable environment, Dashan took part in a VCD programme--“Travel with Dashan”-- to teach daily and up-to-date English in real-life situations.
