Endless sea, sand and sunshine on a tiny island--everyone' s idea of heaven. Who wouldn' t want to live in such a place.?
One person who certainly does is Ben Southall, from the UK. The 34-year-old was one of more than 34,000 people who applied for the post of "caretaker" on Hamilton Island, Australia, which the local government called "the best job in the world". The position starts in July and runs for six months. The salary is 150,000 Australian dollars(780,639 yuan).
Why Southall? Well, first let's take a look at the criteria(标准) for the job: "We're looking for applicants who like to have adventures, have a great love of the outdoors and have good commu-nication skills. "
On his application video, Southall expressed a love of adventure and included photographs of himself riding an ostrich(鸵鸟 ), running a marathon, diving, and kissing a giraffe. "From the time he was announced in the Top 50, and then the Top 16, Southall did a great job by showing true ex-citement about Queensland," Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor said in a statement.
"His ideas for how he will make the role his own.., as well as his ability to rise to a challenge impressed the judges and helped him to win his place in the top job," Lawlor said.
Southall was born in Coventry, UK and used his parents' home as a base for his adventures. He had an old Land Rover that he used for a charity-fund-raising trek(跋涉) across Africa which in-volved joining in five marathons( a 42.16 km race) and climbing five mountains.
"It was sometimes hard work to make him get his head down and do his work because he always wanted to be outside," his mother said about his early years.
"He wanted to go surfing in South Africa, so he got a job house-sitting to pay for it. We regu-larly ask him when he is going to get a proper job, but he is confident and has a strong set of friends and is a great social animal. Now he has got the perfect job for his skills," said his father.
So, you see? No matter what type of person you are, there's always the possibility of getting a dream job. How' s that? Just read the job descriptions carefully and think about how your skills and qualities fit with the ones needed for the job. That' s what Southall did to get his job.

42. According to Lawlor, what wasn' t the reason that helped Southall win the job?

August has always been difficult for me. It is the time when I realize that the books my English teacher assigned to me are not going to read themselves and that I have a difficult month in front of me.

You might think that I don’t want to spend my summer reading, but that’s not the problem: I love reading. On the first day of my summer holidays this year, I went to the library and got “A Gathering of Old Men” by African-American writer Ernest Gaines. I enjoyed it very much. I read all the magazines that my parents subscribe to and spend about 30 minutes every day with the morning paper. So why do I hate summer reading for school? Because the books on summer reading lists are often slow-going and just uninviting. Teachers and librarians don’t understand that summer reading can be entertaining as well as educational. They choose books that a friend of my mother’s calls “spinach books”: good for you, but not much fun to take in. Every summer, I read them, hate them and get bitter about the experience.

This bitterness started three years ago when I was about to begin high school. As preparation, my English teacher told me to read “The Age of Innocence” by American author Edith Wharton. I’m sure there are many people who enjoyed “The Age of Innocence” — some might even say it’s their favorite book.

But I don’t think any of these people read it as a 14-year-old boy on his summer vacation.

“The Age of Innocence” is the story of a forbidden romance in New York 100 years ago. At 14, my only experience with romance was my love for baseball. I couldn’t imagine being in love, much less being in love in 1900. “The Age of Innocence” was totally different to my life.

Most of my required summer reading has been like that — books written in a style that plays up the adjectives and plays down the verbs. I guess teachers don’t think exciting plots make for “good literature”. To me, though, a good writer describes events and characters in a way that makes the reader want to know what happens next.

If I were making up a summer reading list, it would include “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” by George V. Higgins, “The Right Stuff” by Tom Wolfe, and “Into Thin Air” by Jon Krakauer. These are all books that have literary value but, just as important, can also entertain kids on vacation. If the teachers could stand a little fun in the books they assign, my Augusts would be a lot more enjoyable.

A. he doesn’t like reading in summer vacation

B. he is to read the books boring and not right for kids

A. they can change his opinion                            B. he can learn a lot more from them

4. In the opinion of the author of this passage, a good writer should be ___________.

A. one who describes events and characters in different ways

第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Soon it may be harder to stop and smell the roses.

Growing levels of air pollution from power plants and automobiles have reduced flower fragrances (芬芳) by up to 90 percent in the US.That is compared with pre-industrial levels,a new study has found.

The trend is unpleasant for human noses, but may be life - threatening for bees and butterflies.

"Many insects find flowers by folowing the scent(香味) produced by those flowers," said the studies lead author Jose D.Fuentes,an environmental scientist at the University of Virginia.

"The increasing pollution makes it difficult for them to locate the flowers and feed on their nectar(花蜜)."

Scientists have alrady known that flowers produce scent molecules(分子) that bond with pollutants. The process breaks down the plants' sweet smell.

With more pollution in the air,the scent molecules don't remain effective as long and travel shorter distances on the wind.

The new study suggests that in the mid - 19th century, when pollution levels were first recorded, scent molecules would have been able to travel some 1,000 to 1,200 meters.

Today,in the polluted air found downwind of large cities, scentst may only make it some 200 to 300 meters.

The report was recently published in the journal,Atmospheric Environment.

Bee farmers have reported that bee populations are dropping dramatically in many parts of the world in recent years. Could these missing scents be a factor?

Scientists trying to hind the cause of bee population declines have blamed bacteria, pesticides, and even cellphone radiation.

Jay Evans,an entomologist(昆虫学者) at the US Department of Agriculture's bee research laboratory, was interested in the new study. But he says he hasn't seen bee behavior that suggests trouble with scents.

"Over the last couple of summers I don't think the bees in this area were bringing in much less food,"he said.

"It might be that they had to work harder, but it seems like as long as there were bees to collect food they were finding flowers somewhere."

But Fuentes fears that the fading smell of flowers may stress insects that are already faced with other threats.

"The effects shown in these studies will simply exacerbate whatever the bees are going through right now,"he said.

"It's something that is really worthwhile paying attention to."

  56.What's the passage mainly about?

A.How greatly air plooution affects our lives.

B.Effects of air pollution on bee populations.

   C.Measures to fight air pollution.

D.The rapid decline of bee populations in the world.

57.According to the passage,Jay Evans probably agrees that ______ .

A.bees are the insect that suffers most from air pollution

B.bees are at risk of dying out owing to air pollution

C.the fading smell of flowers doesn't affect bees so greatly as was thought

D.as is often the case, bees fail to locate the flowers because of the missing scents

58.The word"exacerbate" in the last paragraph but one probably means ______.

   A.worsen B.improve C.get rid of D.decrease

59.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.The more air pollution there is in a region, the greater the destruction of the flower scents.

B.Bacteria, pesticides, and cellphone radiation are blamed for causing the decline of bees.

C.The scent molecules produced by flowers in a less polluted environment oculd travel longer and farther.

D.Air pollution does more harm to insects such as bees and butterflies than human beings.
