At least 115 Chinese miners have been pulled alive from a flooded coal mine after more than seven days trapped underground.

Rescuers cheered and some shed tears as the latest survivors emerged alive Monday after more than a week trapped in a flooded mine in north China's Shanxi Province. Officials were also relieved as their round-the-clock rescue mission prevented one of the country's worst mining disasters.

The head of the province's Work Safety ministry, Luo Lin, was among thousands of relatives waiting desperately for news at the pit entrance after rescuers said they had heard voices deep within the mine shaft over the weekend.

It is a miracle in China's mining rescue history, Luo says. He thanked the rescuers for their effort as he counted the miners leaving the entrance.

By late evening Monday, 115 miners had been pulled out alive, China's state media said. They were led to waiting ambulances with their eyes covered to prevent the glare from lights. All are said to be in a stable condition after being trapped in water for nearly nine days. They were able to breathe during their ordeal thanks to air pockets.

Three-thousand rescuers dug and pumped water for seven days to reach the miners at the Wangjialing Coal Mine, which is considered a modern facility.

The first survivors were brought to the surface shortly after midnight on Monday. Attempts to reach the 38 who remain trapped are continuing.

153 people were believed to be trapped underground. But families say this is an underestimate, claiming many more were working in the mine at the time of the flooding.

A preliminary investigation last week found that officials had ignored reports of water leaks prior to the accident.

China relies heavily on coal to fuel its booming economy. But it has some of the most dangerous mines in the world, with many mine bosses ignoring safety concerns to meet demand and chase profits.

The government has sought to improve safety in recent years by clamping down on illegal mines and this seems to have prevented many deaths.

According to official figures, 2,631 coal miners died in 1,616 mine accidents in China in 2009 – down 18 percent from the previous year.

Read the following passage.Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

(Reuters)-At least 115 miners were pulled alive from a flooded coal mine in north China after being trapped for over a week, eating bark to survive, prompting extremely happy officials to hail their survival a miracle.

Officials said 153 miners were trapped in the unfinished Wangjialing mine, belonging to two of China's larger state-owned firms in Xiangning, Shanxi Province, after water gushed(喷, 涌)into the shafts last Sunday.

Late on Sunday night and throughout Monday, the survivors were pulled out from a platform, where the rescuers had drilled a vertical hole to ensure oxygen in the water-flooded pit and send down bags of glucose(葡萄糖).Thirty-eight miners were still missing.

"It is a miracle," said Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety."The trapped miners stayed so firmly determined down the mine shaft, passing through eight days and eight nights to live." The workers also survived by eating bark from pine wood used in building the mines, Chinese television said.

The government had succeeded in encouraging thousands of rescue workers to pump out water and search for the miners. After that, the water level dropped low enough for rescue workers to enter the shaft.

It was rare good news in China's dangerous coal-mining industry, the deadliest in the world with thousands killed every year in floods, explosions, collapses and other accidents.Shanxi Province is the heartland of that industry.

Strong demand for energy and not strict safety standards have made China's mines often deadly places to work, despite a government drive to clamp down on(对……进行压制或取缔)small, unsafe operations where most accidents occur.

Workers are tempted into(被诱惑去)the mines by wages that can be much higher than for many other jobs open to blue-collar workers and rural migrants.

China has consolidated(合并)or taken over many private mines, which has helped cut accidents.According to official statistics, the number of people killed in Chinese coal mines dropped to 2,631 in 2009, an average of seven a day, from 3,215 in 2008.But the deadliest accidents are not limited to private firms.

1.According to the second paragraph, what caused the serious accident?(no more than 6 words)

2.How did the rescuers manage to send down oxygen and bags of glucose into the pit?(no more than 5 words)

3.According to the passage, what measures does the government take to help cut accidents?(no more than 13 words)

4.What is the news about?(no more than 12 words)

One of the worst feelings you have as a professional athlete is the feeling after losing a game to a team that you should have beaten. That happened last night against the lowly Boston Celtics (波士顿凯尔特人队). They had only won 13 games the whole year and were really struggling. We had just come off a very good win against the Orlando Magic on the road and were feeling good about ourselves.

The day did not start out good for us when we learned that T-Mac was going to miss the game with the flu. When you lose your best players (Yao, T-Mac), everyone must play a little harder and do a little bit more on the floor. We put Bonzi Wells into the lineup (he was the only one to have a good game for us), in place of T-Mac.

It was a nasty game. We are usually one of the best three point shooting teams in the NBA and we only made 1 of 22 three point shots! I have never seen that happen. Never! Rarer Alston, Luther Head, and I combined to shoot 5 of 33 from the field. Ouch! You aren’t going to win too many games like that. Even as poorly as we shot the ball, we still had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter but failed to make the winning plays that you must make to leave the floor victorious.

In the locker-room after the game, everybody felt terrible. When we play a bad game, we feel that we let our teammates down. There is a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach when you leave the gym and you just want to go home and not talk to anyone. It is a terrible feeling, but it is a feeling that makes you want to try harder and do better the next time.

I’ll talk to you guys later,

Shane
