Here's Trouble

There is no other five-year-old like him. He has a potato - shaped head, bushy eyebrows and a voice that is not easily forgotten. He is not evil, but trouble follows him wherever he goes.

Crayon Shin-chan enjoys great popularity in China. He has many fans in Hong Kong, Taiwan and on the mainland. And he is one of the hottest cartoon characters in his home country, Japan.

But, the troublemaker's show was ranked the No. 1 most unwanted cartoon program by Japan's Parents Association on April 18.

More than half the parents who took part in the study thought Shin-chan was a negative(消极的)role model for children. They believed his actions and speech were adult in nature and not suitable for kids.

Many parents and education experts in China agree with them. Shin-chan, they say, is really offensive(令人讨厌的). “Crayon Shin-chan is full of humor. The boy shows some terrible adult mentality(想法), which doesn't match his age,” said Pang Lijuan, a professor of the Education Department at Beijing Normal University.

Pang further pointed out that Shin-chan destroys the traditional image of a polite, hard-working boy. She fears that some teens may copy his behavior and harm their psychological development.

Pang and many others in China think that Shin-chan is a cartoon for adults, not for children.

But some kids disagree. Jiang Xin, a senior 2 student in Luhe Middle School in Beijing, became a fan of Shinchan after he first saw the cartoon two years ago. He said it is Shin-chan's humor, courage and cleverness that make him and his friends love the little cartoon character. “Shin-chan looks at the adults' world with kids' eyes. He uncovers the hypocrisy(伪善)and selfishness in a childish way,” explained Jiang, “We watch it just for fun.”

Shin-chan's “father”, Japan's popular cartoonist, Yoshito Usui, never thought Shin-chan would cause such a heated discussion. He argued that Shin-chan is a childish copy of Japan's middle-aged men. The boy does everything adults would like, but don't dare to do. “People can easily forgive him because he's only five years old,” said Yoshito.

Many young people want to become pop-stars. It is their great ambition(雄心)of life. They think: pop stars earn a lot of money; they lead interesting and exciting lives; thousands of fans love them; they become famous!

You, but first they must become stars. Most performers start life with a group. This is the pattern nowadays. But there are many groups and the competition is hard. Groups appear and disappear almost overnight. Only a small number survive. Almost without exception(例外)they have to work very hard before they reach the top.

And very few reach the top and stay there. In England there are perhaps thirty or so groups at the top. Most of these do not earn so much money: perhaps 500 pounds each time they perform. What’s more, they have quite a lot of expenses. They have to pay a manager, for example. He is the key person in their lives and he takes about 20% of their earnings-perhaps more. Then there are their clothes, their instruments and their vans(车). Sometimes they are still playing for the last two items.

And don’t forget, they have to travel a great deal-sometimes 2 000 miles in one week. At times they even sleep in their van instead of a hotel, just to save money.

So now, what do you think? Are pop-stars so rich? And do they have such exciting lives?

( )1. The right statement of the following about most pop-stars is .

A. they fail to reach to top B. they lead relaxed(放松的)lives

C. they can travel all over the world D. they spend a lot of money on their clothes

( )2. Why is the group’s manager will paid?

A. Because he runs this group. B. Because he looks after them.

C. Because he is a great person. D. Because he buys them clothes and instruments.

( )3. How do pop-groups spend the money they earn?

A. They pay the manager 20% of their earnings or more.

B. They have to pay for clothes, instruments and vans.

C. They often make trips.

D. All of the above.

( )4. The writer makes us believe .

A. it is pleasant to become a pop-star

B. if you work very hard in pop groups, you will reach the top

C. pop stars are neither too rich nor too happy

D. general persons had better not dream of being pop-stars
