This is a very simple statement，yet not so easy to do—Keep your promises. I try to conduct my life in this manner. If you tell someone that you will do something for them，you can’t turn around at the 1ast minute and say, I didn’t do it because it wasn’t convenient. Keeping your promises is also a way to live your life with integrity. That's why it’s important to be aware of your  choice of words, and to live consciously. There were many times that I was not able to keep my promise for example of repaying some money to a friend or colleague, somewhere in the back of my mind I had always intended to repay the debt even if it was years in the future. But that is not a very good way of living. If you consistently live like this you will lose friends because l was not true to my word. It is heartbreaking for both sides.

Especial with Children you need to keep your promise. I get so disturbed when l hear parents trying to sooth a child’s temper and the parent says “I promise一" Later when the child remind the parent or guardian，it becomes clear that the parent had no real thought to keep the promise. The words were just said to placate the child. The parent, as I remember, thought that his or her child would just forget a11 about what was promised. But children have a great memory. Especially when they hear the words I PROMISE. Those words sound stronger than any other words in the English language to a child. We have been taught that those words have power and magic．

      The old shopkeeper led me through to the back of the shop．The room was filled with boxes and
photographs of people dressed in old-fashioned clothes，holding packages in their hands．
“Who are these-people?”I asked．

I was very excited that I had found such a good little shop．I promised Mr. Hopkins that l would
come back soon. “I will tell all my friends about your lovely place，”I told the shopkeeper．
“Please do not do that, sir" , said Mr. Hopkins．“This is a special place for special people．You must
keep this shop a secret．” Then he took my photograph and handed me the picture straight away．
“That was quick!”I exclaimed．I looked at the photograph．In the picture I looked proud and excited holding the presents I had bought in Mr. Hopkins’dusty shop．
On Christmas Day, my friends and relatives were delighted with the presents I had bought for them．
For weeks．my brother begged me to show him where to find this wonderful little shop．I finally agreed to take him to London to show him．   
When we arrived in London，we walked along Oxford Street，past the department store and
Found nothing．The little shop was no longer there．In its place was an empty space being used as a car
park．I checked the area again。There was the music shop，and there was the department store．In between
should have been Hopkins and Son, but it wasn’t there．
As l was staring at the place where the shop should have been, a old policeman came along．“Are
you looking for something sir?”he asked．
I turned and said“I am looking for a little shop called Hopkins and Son．I thought it was here．”
“Oh yes，”said the policeman．“There was a shop here once called Hopkins and Son．It sold all
sorts of things，but it was knocked down over 30 years ago．”
I looked again at the place where the shop had been．Then I reached into my pocket and took out
the photograph that Mr. Hopkins had taken of me holding my presents in the little shop．

This is a story  that happened 15 years ago but it has always stayed with me since then.On the way back from work every evening,more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway.He always waved at every car,he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.Every day after work when I got there，I would quickly roll down my window and give him the coins.Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day.His answer would always be the same，“I’m blessed！”.
It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive，and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was.A single mother of four amazing kids,with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids.Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy.Needless to say that on my was home that day I was very sad and upset.I didn’t remember to look for my spare change and keep it ready like I usually did.I wasn’t feeling the joy as I got off the ramp where the homeless man would be.Yet there he was as alway，as l turned the ramp.He set his eyes on me，while still smiling and waving at others.
While I was waiting for the red light to turn，he strolled over to my car.He had a big smile he looked me straight in the eyes and said “today I will give you a dollar”.He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a dollar bill.I was blown away.I burst into tears.I wanted to jump out of my car and hug him！
You see that day he gave me more than a dollar bill，he taught me a valuable lesson.No matter  what material things are taken  from you，no one can take away your choice to be joyful.
