Mother managed to buy me some more paint and brushes, along with one or two drawing books and a pencil. This, of course, broadened my range of expression and 1 me to have a greater 2 of subjects. After the first few weeks of uncertainty and awkwardness, I 3 contentedly with my new pastime(消遣).I 4 every day upstairs in the back bedroom, completely 5 I was 6 .I didn’t know it then, but I had found a way to be happy again and 7 some of the things that had made me unhappy. 8 I learnt to forget myself.I didn’t miss 9 with my brothers now, for I had something to keep my mind 10 , something to make each day a thing to 11 .I would sit on the floor for hours, holding 12 between my toes, my right leg curled up(蜷缩的)under my left, my arms held tightly at my sides, hands clenched(紧握).All my paint and brushes were 13 me, and I 14 get mother or father to pin(钉住)the drawing paper to the floor with tacks(大头钉)to keep it 15 .It looked like a very awkward position, with my head almost 16 my knees and my back as crooked as a corkscrew(瓶塞钻),but I painted all my best pictures 17 , with the wooden floor as my only easel(画架).Slowly I began to recover from my 18 depression(消沉).I had a feeling of pure joy while I painted, 19 I had never experienced before and 20 seemed almost to lift me above myself.
My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in.Someone will give you an electronic PIN(个人身份号码)to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are.The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them.Music moves with you too.If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it.The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console(控制台), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car.The car works for you because you have the keys.My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.
I like to try new ideas.I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How will I live without them?”

We had just taken off from Athens and found ourselves under the control of two hijackers(劫机者).
I was 1 serving the first-class passengers 2 I was forced against the door. 3 kicked me in the chest, and I 4 a gun at my head.
Two men, very excited, were 5 Arabic at me.I said,“I can speak 6 ,”one of the hijackers replied in 7 German,“Open the door.We come to 8 .”The other was holding some grenades(手榴弹),the pins(弹栓) 9 and bitten between his teeth.
I 10 the key to the driving room, and the hijackers started 11 and kicking at the door.“Captain,”I shouted,“Open up!”Suddenly the 12 flew back, knocking a grenade pin out of the hijacker’s 13 .Instinctively(本能地)I picked it up and 14 it back between his teeth.
In the room they said,“Beirut, Beirut,”but they spoke almost no English.I was translating everything 15 , and the hijackers were beating the flight engineer with a pistol(手枪).Captain John Testrake said,“OK, we’re going to Beirut, but we 16 get flight clearance.”They said, No.You fly to Beirut with a map. 17 .We went into a 180-degree turn, and 18 one hijacker held his pistol.
The crew wanted to see if we had enough fuel to make Beirut, but the hijackers said,“It doesn’t matter.Go until the fuel runs out.”Every time copilot Philip picked up a 19 , they frightened him with a gun.I was crying and shaking, and the German-speaker said,“What are you 20 about?I’m not going to hurt you.”
“Yes,and of South Dakota it's Pierre.Delaware next,capital Dover,with a population of only 5,000…”
Clive listened, checking the names. When they got stuck on Indiana,he came down the tree and went across to them.
“Let me see now,”Mr.Drew was saying.“Indiana,Indiana… the capital must be Fort Wayne”
“No,”said the other.“I think it's Evansville”.
“Indianapolis,”said Clive.“That's the easiest of all to remember.”
Both the men laughed.“He's right,you know,”Mr.Drew said.Clive's father agreed,“Yes,yes.Indiana,Indianapolis.Now Kansas…”
Clive, who was thirteen then, was not very clever at school. But at the moment he felt rather proud of himself.
Looking back now, after many years,Clive remembers some of the ways he learned geography. One thing he remembers clearly is the“test”that took place every other week. The teacher used to pin up a big map on the board — China perhaps,or the United States,Australia or Europe — The map would have everything on it,except the names. The teacher, pointing with a long, wooden stick, began.
“Ready?Fifty questions.Number 1 — write the name of this river.Number 2— the name of this state.3 — its capital,here.4 — the name of this bay.5…”.
Clive has quite forgotten whether he enjoyed learning geography or not.He didn't consider the rights or wrongs.Though he has never studied geography since he left school,he has never forgotten it,he is glad about the way he learned. The work might have been dull, unexciting;but even so,the dullness has given him a lifetime of interest, understanding and pleasure.
