Ever since she was a baby, Heather, aged 5, has watched her parents regularly turn off lights

that aren’t needed and put the day’s newspapers cans, bottles, jars, and other recyclables into a big, yellow bin — that is, if they can't find a second life for the discarded items in their own home first. Plastic packaging, pieces of cardboard, scraps of colored paper, bits of yarn, and small pieces of broken toys are typically dropped into a basket that the whole family rummages through whenever they need supplies for an art project. Recently, after spying a bit of shiny paper on the floor, Heather picked it up and said, "This is pretty. I'll put it in the art basket." Already, like parents, like daughter.

Heather's effort to recycle a scrap of paper rather than throw it away is a tiny gesture with a big message. It shows that even young children can learn about conserving materials and resources, and by extension, protecting the planet, in age-appropriate ways. It also shows that your child is so tuned in to your ways that it is easy to become an environmental role model. But because children are more apt to want to care for something they have a personal stake in, it's as important to expose your child to the natural world as it is to teach her ways to protect it.

This doesn't require week-long camping trips into the wilderness — although those can be fun, enlightening experiences for the whole family. Children can explore, appreciate, and learn about nature literally in their own backyard, in a park, in a community garden, and on trips to the beach or mountains. There's more good news: Giving your child opportunities to connect with nature can also help her develop crucial literacy, language, math, science, social studies, art, problem-solving, and research skills.

Ever since 1790s, society has worried periodically about whether it will be able to produce enough food to feed people in the future. Yet until recently, most of the debate surrounding the issue of food scarcity focused on the potential for increasing the food supply. The key questions were whether there would be enough land and water to produce the amount of food needed and whether technology could keep increasing the yields of food grains. Now, however, scientists are growing concerned that the intensive use of land, energy and fertilizer that modem agriculture seems to require endangers the health of the environment. This anxiety has been integrated into the general debate about food scarcity, but the question of the demand for food has not. In fact, relatively little attention has been paid to the issue of demand despite the fact that like energy and water, food can be preserved and the demand for it adjusted to meet human needs and lessen the burden that modern agriculture places on the environment.

Unlike with many other forms of consumption, there are limits to the physical quantity of food that people can consume. In a number of high-income countries, that limit seems to have been reached already. If global population does double by 2050, as many have predicted, providing everyone with a rich and varied diet would only require a tripling (三倍) of food production. Alternatively, with sufficient improvements in efficiency and adoption of a healthier diet in high-income countries, it would be possible to provide such a diet for the entire global population with just a doubling of food production. But even a doubling of current production could strain Earth's ecosystems (生态系统), as critics of modem agriculture's intensive use of resources will prove. Clearly, then, increases in food demand will have to be slowed if we hope to achieve a sustainable agricultural system. Central to the issue of demand, however, is the question of how much food the world really needs.

   1. What people used to worry about most is——.

     A. the rapid increase of populations

     B. to adjust our demand for food so that we can make the total demand go down

     C. whether we have enough land and technology to feed the rapidly climbing populations

     D. the environmental deterioration thanks to excessive grains production

   2. What people worry about most now is——.

     A. the rapid increase of populations

     B. to adjust our demand for food so that we can make the total demand to go down

     C. whether we have enough land and technology to feed the rapidly climbing populations

     D. the environmental deterioration thanks to excessive grains production

   3. According to the author, one potential way to reduce the total food demand is——

        A. to adjust our diet to be more reasonable

      B. to produce more grains

      C. to employ more advanced technologies for more grains

      D. to develop a land, energy and fertilizer intensive agriculture

   4. From the passage it can be inferred that critics are not satisfied with current agriculture in that ——.

      A. it is low efficiency

      B. it has not produced enough grains to meet the growing demand

      C. it depletes too much land, energy and fertilizer

      D. it gives rise to many environmental problems

   5. According to the author, to achieve a sustainable agricultural system, the first thing we should do is——.

       A. to develop more advanced agricultural technologies

       B. to have a comprehensive survey on the exact total food demand

       C. to associate agriculture with environment

       D. to adjust people's diet

A week ago, I had the great pleasure of reading an e-book, When Money Talks, Listen! By Rich Ezzo.It took only about an hour to read.

When I first received a copy, I thought it was a Get Rich Quick type of publication.Nothing is wrong with Get Rich Quick, but my mind just doesn’t chase after dreams of wealth.I think that if God ever wants me to be rich, he knows where to find my purse.

When I began reading When Money Talks, Listen!, I was overjoyed to find that Rich Ezzo isn’t money hungry either. He, too, is hungry far more important than money.

Since I love this e-book so much, why wait a week to write the review? Simple.I wanted to see if the effect it had on me was a keeper. After reading the last word of the e-book, I totally agreed with the subtitle which promised to forever change the way we thought about money.I had so many thoughts running around my mind that I had to install(安装) a stoplight to stop some while others made their way into the picture, then I yielded(让路) them as a few ones arrived in town.I had a mental traffic jam, which only goes to show how slow the traffic usually is

It has been a week and the effect is the same.I truly do look at money differently and have even done a few things differently this week. This is an e-book you’ll want to read, I promise.I often recommend books to my daughter, and this is one that I didn’t just “suggest”---I left it open at the bottom of the computer and told each one, “Read it, you’ll love it.”

I would never point someone in a direction I wouldn’t go myself.I urge you to visit the author’s website, Myster Money, and to download the e-book.You won’t regret it.

B.deals with how to make money

C.is also an e-book written by Rich Ezzo

The author didn't write the review as soon as he finished reading the book because________.

A.he was too excited to write anything

B.he was not sure whether he did well

C.he had to wait for Rich Ezzo's permission

D.he wondered if the book would have long influence on him

Since new technologies are ever growing, employers now have the chance to monitor (监控) their employees to make them spare more time to work when they use their phones, computer terminals, emails and even when an employee is using the Internet.

Recent surveys have shown that a majority of employers monitor their employees’ activities. It was found that three fourths of employers monitored the websites their employees visited in order to prevent improper surfing. The survey further indicated that 65% of employers used software to block connections to websites considered off limits to employees. One third of employers monitored their employees’ number of keystrokes and the amount of time spent on the keyboard and lastly just over half of the employers surveyed review and kept email messages.

Most of the time, email is not considered private if the email system is used at a company, the employer owns it and is allowed to review its contents.Email messages that are sent within the company, as well as those that are sent from the employee’s terminal to another company, or from another company to the employee are subject to monitoring. If an email is deleted out of the employee’s account, that doesn’t mean that they are totally deleted. The messages are kept in memory.Emails are often backed up along with other important data from the computer system. If an employer’s email policy specifically states that messages marked as “private” will be kept confidential (机密的),however, there may also be some exceptions to that policy (政策).

In order to know their employer’s email policy, employees should read over the employee handbook. If the handbook doesn’t address the issue of email monitoring, they should speak with their employer about their policy for emails and privacy.Currently there are very few laws that address workplace privacy; however, there are some organizations that are working to advocate for employees so that there will be a stronger government regulation of employee monitoring activities.

According to the author, the employers’ monitoring ____.

A.may be an efficient management method

       B.should be performed secretly

C.has resulted from the development in computers

       D.is quite common nowadays

Employers probably think that monitoring the employees can help them ____.

       A.improve their work efficiency(有效) B.use computers properly

C.develop a way of keeping office secrets  D.reduce their mental pressures

It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

A.employees should delete their own emails at once to keep them secret

B.an employer’s email policy may protect the employees’ privacy

C.nobody can help solve the problem of office privacy

D.an employee may feel troubled by being monitored in the office

The underlined phrase “advocate for” in the last paragraph means “____”.

       A.tell the employees the truth

       B.publicly support

C.ask the employees to be more attentive

D.remind the employees of the possible failure
