“It was cool, because I got a chance to be in a studio and see how a record is made,”says 14-year-old Javon Martin, who joined the music clubhouse 3 years ago.“It has impacted my life in a big way. People are actually starting to see me as an artist.”Ten-year-old Akheylah Hunter didn’t play an instrument when she became a club member last year. Now,she plays piano and sings with the band. What she likes best, she says,is performing.“We performed in different places,”she says.“We go on trips and it is fun.”

Since the Music Clubhouse opened three years ago,it’s served almost 500 kids.Aggeler says performing in front of different audiences helps the young musicians build self-esteem.Coming to the club to prepare for those performances helps them learn how to deal with their personal problems and concerns.

“I can see what it does for them and it just develops confidence,”he explains.“It’s also an escape from the big problems we have in the neighborhood. So whether they feel embarrassed about a zit on their face,or they feel embarrassed because they’re not as tall as somebody, they can rap about it and let it out a little bit.”

To expand the club and help more kids learn music,Aggeler sought the support of the community. The Berklee College of Music and local music stores have provided free equipment. The club has also gotten support from the Music and Youth Initiative,a nonprofit that develops after school music education programs in underserved communities in Massachusetts. All these have made it possible to provide kids who may not have the means to get private music lessons the opportunity to still learn music and get all the benefits that music education brings.”

Why does the writer mention the two children in the first paragraph?

A. To tell readers that all children like music.

B. To provide examples of how children like the club.

C. To convince readers that music can solve many problems.

D. To show readers how to discover children’s potentials.

Which of the following was NOT mentioned as a benefit of joining the club?

A. Helping the youngsters to build self-confidence.

B. Helping its members escape from problems.

C. Learning to deal with personal problems.

D. Learning to get help from nonprofit groups.

What is Mr.Aggeler’s possible post?

A. An organizer of the club.               B.A conductor of the band.

C. An expert in child problems.            D.A parent of one of the children.

What does the writer intend the passage to be?

A. An advertisement for a club.

B.A promotion of some non-profit groups.

C.An introduction of a music club for children.

D.A try to call for attention on children’s needs.

Which of the following might NOT be included in activities of the club?

A. Putting on performances.              B. Making records.

Music for Little Mozarts is a programme designed to help your little ones develop a love of music. Learning music at an early age helps develop minds and expand cognitive (认知的) ability. While listening to music can certainly help your youngster pick up songs, actually learning to play the piano can help your child’s development.

This programme focuses on little creatures that both entertain and teach. By grasping the attention of a young child’s mind and engaging them with stories along with hands on experience, you can provide them with a positive experience that may produce a little Mozart in later years.

Within this multi-book and multi-year lesson plan there are ten little characters that help draw the child into the lesson plan. These little creatures actually can be used to help the child grasp basic concepts in music. The series starts out in the preschool years and provides day by day lessons that can aid the child or a classroom of children right through early adolescence (青春期).

The series is designed for both classroom and preschool use and for those at home with homeschoolers. It contains a series of books along with audio CD’s, flash cards, and other visual aids that can help very young children develop an ear and an eye for music.

It can be hard to hold the attention spans of children for very long. However, with the right creativity and the proper attention along with simple, easy to master daily lessons, most children will not only grasp music rather quickly, they will also develop a love of real music, not just banging on a piano keyboard and making sounds.

The short, daily lessons are planned out so that children learn to play music by ear. They learn to play real songs and master real passages quickly and easily. This element keeps them involved. They also master playing by ear and then later by reading rather quickly.

Our brains work in complex and strange ways. There are some people who can calculate the day of the week for any given date in 40,000 years, but who cannot add two plus two. Others can perform complex classical piano pieces after hearing them once, but they cannot read or write.

Dr.J.Langdon Down first described this condition in 1887.He called these people idiot savants. An idiot savant is a person who has significant mental impairment (损伤) , such as in autism or retardation.  At the same time, the person also exhibits some extraordinary skills, which are unusual for most people. The skills of the savant may vary from being exceptionally gifted in music or in mathematics, or having a photographic memory.

One of the first descriptions of a human who could calculate quickly was written in 1789 by Dr.Benjamin Rush, an American doctor. His patient, Thomas Fuller, was brought to Virginia as a slave in 1724. It took Thomas only 90 seconds to work out that a man who has lived 70 years, 17 days, and 12 hours has lived 2,210,500,800 seconds.Despite this ability, he died in 1790 without ever learning to read or write.

Another idiot savant slave became famous as a pianist in the 1860s. Blind Tom had a vocabulary of only 100 words, but he played 5 ,000 musical pieces beautifully.

In the excellent movie Rain Man, made in 1988 and available on video cassette, Dustin Hoffman plays an idiot savant who amazes his brother played by Tom Cruise, with his ability to perform complex calculations very rapidly.

Today we more clearly recognize that the idiot savant is special because of brain impairment.Yet not all brain impairment leads to savant skills. Some studies have shown that people who have purposeful interruption of the left side of the brain can develop idiot savant skills. However, few people wish to participate in such experiments. There are many excellent reasons for not undergoing unnecessary experimentation on one's brain. The term idiot savant is outdated and inappropriate. Virtually all savants have a high degree of intelligence and are thus not idiots.

1.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Idiot savants have areas of outstanding abilities.

B.Human Beings have complicated thinking process.

C.The brains of the idiot savants are partly impaired.

D.The reasons why people have wonderful skills vary.

2.Which of the following can be done by Rain Man?

A.He can play wonderful pieces of classical music.

B.He can guess out exactly the length of a man's life.

C.He can memorize the contents of the pictures fast.

D.He can count matches dropped on the floor quickly.

3.What can you infer from the passage?

A.Idiot savants have real talents for art and math.

B.Dr.Down is the first person who found idiot savants.

C.Few people wish to risk becoming savants by brain operations.

D.Intentional left brain impairments will surely lead to idiot savants.

Their guidance teacher was their adviser, consulting with them when the group encountered difficulties.Though they sought advice from English, math and science teachers, they were responsible for monitoring one another's work and giving one another feedback. There were no grades, but at the end of the term, the students wrote evaluations of their classmates.

Practice it.As you read,do something with what you've learned.Don't just enjoy the mental exercise.Use the knowledge. If you read about painting, try it!

Make a “to learn” list.Compose a “to learn” list for yourself.Maybe you want to speak better English, play the piano,or cook French food.Whatever interests you,put it on your list and then make the time to do it.
