A group of Italian soldiers led by a captain were advancing slowly toward the position of the enemy. They arrived at a farmhouse, in front of which sat a small boy, cutting a branch of a tree with his knife.

　　"I don't have any family," said the boy. "I'm an orphan. I used to work for the family that lived here. They've gone, but I stayed in order to see the fighting."

　　Something interesting happened during the last Christmas shopping hour in London. A poor man, through no fault of his own, found himself locked in a big store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with people buying presents and the assistants were dead beat and wanted to go home. It seemed that all the necessary checks were made before the store was locked, and the assistants went home to enjoy the three-day holiday.

　　Several years ago I worked in an office, which I had a locust tree growing outside the window. It had grown into a tall tree and must have been there for a long time. The tree blocked the view and made the office seem dull, unfortunately this happened to be the room assigned to me and I was depressed by it for quite some time.
　　When the first spring came, everything was green except the locust tree. Secretly, I was very happy because I had thought it had died.
