celebrating.I once asked my readers in the Chicago SunTimes, where I took the place of Ann
Landers,to name the person to whom they would say"I owe you one."Victor La Porte,45,wrote
to me from his hospital bed about his kid brother,Tony.
For three years,Victor had been terribly sick,His arms were black and blue.He often passed
out.His kidneys(肾) had failed,and dialysis(肾透析) wasn't working.Victor was dying.
Doctors said a transplant(移植) would help, and Tony kept offering his kidney, but Victor
refused. He didn't want to put his brother through the pain or the risk of living with one kidney.
Tony insisted."Hey,I love you,"he kept saying.Transplant doctors explained the reason God
gave us two kidneys is that we can offer one.It took a long time to persuade Victor, but finally
he agreed.Several times the brothers went to the hospital, only to have the operation put off
because of Victor's infections(感染).But Tony never thought of backing out. After each
disappointment,he announced,"We're coming back!"He even got Victor a Tshirt that read I'M
NO QUITTER.
Finally the operations were arranged. The one on Tony was harder.Doctors had to remove
part of his rib to get the kidney out.His recover took longer than Victor's, and he had more pain.
Victor wrote:"Because of Tony's unselfishness,I have a chance to see my four children grow
up.I'll never know my brother's pain, fears and feelings. All I know is the love we share. How can
I tell him thanks?Maybe by letting everyone know I have the greatest brother in the world."

downstairs died and my Grandmother wanted to make some cookies for her. My grandmother did not analyze
(分析) how the lady treated her, or if the lady needed any cookies, or even if the lady would like the cookies.
She didn't think how much the lady has done for her. She simply began baking.
My Grandmother turned 94 last week and this I believe is her secret to life. My grandmother is generous
(慷慨) and hard-working in a way that is rare for our time. She lives by a simple belief: if someone needs your
help, you help. Never mind all the analyzing and thinking whether the person deserves or appreciates the help.
My grandmother doesn't sit around thinking about who might be making use of her: she simply does what is
needed.
At 94, she is busy in life. She is making a blanket for a new great grandchild, and worried that I don't have
enough kitchen towels for my home. She is bringing soup to a sick neighbor, and teaching the new wife of her
cousin (who is 88) how to cook Italian food.
My grandmother had every right to give up, but she didn't-and amazingly life did bring her good things,
like a husband with twinkling blue eyes who was much ahead of his time and believed that men should do an
equal amount of cooking and cleaning in the home, three beautiful children (my father and two aunts), 22
grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. My grandmother is not afraid to give someone she barely knows
a bowl of soup. She never keeps herself out of the world.

X-rays can show a lot. CAT scans can show even more. They can give three-dimensional (三维) view of
body organs(器官).
What is a CAT scan? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Tomography (层面X线照相术). It is a special
X-ray machine that gets a 360 - degree picture of a small area of a patient's body.
Doctors use X-rays to study and examine diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can find foreign
objects inside the body or to take pictures of some organs inside if special things as dyes or special liquids
are added to the organs to be X-rayed.
A CAT scanner, however, uses a beam (光束) of X-rays to give a cross-sectional view of a particular
part of the body. A fine beam of X-rays is scanned across the body and circled around the patient from many
different angles (角度). A computer analyzes (分析) the information from each angle and produces a clear
cross-sectional picture on the screen. This picture is then photographed for later use. Several cross-sections,
taken one after another, can give a clear "photo" of the entire body or of any body organs. The newest CAT
scanners can even give a clear picture of active, moving organs just as a fast-action camera can "stop the
action" giving clear pictures of what appear only mistily (模糊) to the eye. And because of the 360-degree
pictures, CAT scans show 3-dimensional views of organs in a manner that was once only seen during surgery
or autopsy (examining a dead body).
