Earthquakes strike suddenly at any time of the day or night, there’s no way to tell when. If an earthquake happens, it may cause many deaths and injuries and great damage. Decide how and where your family will get together if separate. Choose an out-of-state friend or relative that the family members can call after the quake to report where they are and how they are. Know the safe places in each room: under the strong tables, desks, or against inside walls and keep enough food, water and other things, including a flashlight, a radio, medicines and clothing.
During the earthquake, you should keep a clear head and never be too nervous to know what to do. Protect your head and neck with your arms. If possible, take a book, a pillow or any other things to protect yourself from falling glass and ruins. If you are indoors, you must immediately lie under any strong furniture. If outdoors, move to an open area away from trees, buildings, walls and power poles. In a narrow valley, move to the center of it and look out for falling stones. If you are in the car, move to the side of the road and stop the car. Do not stop near buildings, power lines and on or under the bridges. Stay in your car until the shaking stops.
Do not move badly injured person unless they are in great danger after the earthquake. Do not use the telephone immediately unless there is a serious injury or fire. Turn on your radio for instructions and news reports. Be prepared for aftershocks. If you should leave your home, post a message inside your home telling family members where you can be found.

is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain important signs including pulse, temperature, an
unobstructed (未堵塞的) airway and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's
condition from worsening and provide relief from pain. First aid must be done as quickly as possible. In
the case of the badly injured, a few minutes car make the difference between complete recovery and loss
of life.
First-aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and the provider's level of knowledge and skill.
Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to lifelong disabilify.
Despite the variety of possible injuries, several suggestions should be followed if first aid applies to all
emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if sensible, should be
reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next,
assess (评估) the scene, asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of the
injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and preexisting conditions such as high blood
pressure and heart trouble. The victim's medical card should be checked that describes special medical
conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move
the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist.
One method to assess a victim's condition is known as the ABC, which stands for:
A-Airway: ls it open and unobstructed?
B-Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
C-Circulation (循环) : Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding badly? Check skin color and
temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.
B. spend a few minutes making the difference between recovery and death
C. know what to do and what not to do according to the condition of the victim
D. make it clear what illness the victim has had
B. Checking whether the victim is bleeding.
C. Telephoning a hospital at once.
D. Waiting for medical treatment before giving first aid.
B. signs
C. instruments
D. treatments
B. the history and skills of first aid
C. some knowledge to help anyone who may be injured in an accident
D. that first aid is dangerous to those who do not know how to do it
When I was going home to India last year, I called up my mother to ask if she wanted anything from China.
When India had not opened up its markets to the world, I carried suitcase loads of dark glasses and jeans. Thankfully, we can get all these anywhere in India now.
Still, her answer surprised me: “Green tea.”
As long as I can remember she didn’t even drink Indian tea.
I dutifully bought a big packet of Longjing and headed home to hear the story. My mother and her brother, both regular newspaper readers, believed that Chinese green tea was the wonder drug for all illnesses.
At the turn of the century, China was not really familiar to the average Indian. It was a strange country.
How things change! And how soon!
Now every town of any size seems to have a “China Market”. And everyone is talking about China.
The government of India has planned to send a team to China to see how things are done. A minister once said that India must open the doors for more foreign investment (投资) and such a step would “work wonders as it did for China”.
But it’s a two-way street. I just heard about a thousand Shenzhen office workers who have gone to Rangalore to train in software. Meanwhile, all the IT majors are setting up a strong presence in China.
No wonder that trade, which was only in the millions just ten years ago, is expected to hit about US $15 billion for last year and US $20 billion by 2012, a goal set by both governments.
No wonder, my colleague wrote some weeks ago about this being the Sino-Indian (中国和印度的) century as the two countries started on January 1st the Sino-Indian Friendship Year.
But what is still a wonder to me is my mother’s drinking Chinese tea.
1.Why did the mother ask for Chinese green tea?
A.She was tired of Indian tea.
B.She had a son working in China.
C.She believed it had a curing effect.
D.She was fond of Chinese products.
2.What does the author mean by “it’s a two-way street” in Paragraph 10?
A.China and India have different traffic rules.
B.Tea trade works wonders in both India and China.
C.Chinese products are popular in both China and India.
D.There are exchanges between India and China.
3.What do we know about the Indian IT industry?
A.It is seeking further development in China.
B.It will move its head office to Shenzhen.
C.It has attracted an investment of US $15 billion.
D.It caught up with the US IT industry in 2008.
4.In the text the author expresses _______.
A.his concern for his mother’s health
B.his support for drinking Chinese green tea
C.his surprise at China’s recent development
D.his wonder at the growth of India’s IT industry
5.It is inferred in the text that _______.
A.the author’s mother loves China very much
B.the Indians were not familiar with China before
C.the government of India encourages their people to buy Chinese green tea
D.the two countries didn’t cooperate until last year

Lying in the sun on a rock, the cougar(美洲豹)saw Jeb and his son, Tom, before they saw it. Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar. It worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too.
Jeb let go of his jacket, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar’s enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb.
“Tom, no!” shouted his father.
But Tom broke and ran and that’s the last thing you do with a cougar. The second Tom broke free, Jeb threw himself on the cougar, just as it jumped from the rock. They hit each other in mid-air and both fell. The cougar was on Jeb in a flash, forgetting about Tom, which was what Jeb wanted.
Cougars are not as big as most people think and a determined man stands a chance, even with just his fists. As the cougar’s claws(爪子)got into his left shoulder, Jeb swung his fist at its eyes and hit hard. The animal howled(吼叫)and put its head back. Jeb followed up with his other fist. Then out of the corner of his eye, Jeb saw Tom. The boy was running back to help his father.
“Knife, Tom” shouted Jeb.
The boy ran to his father’s bag, while Jeb stated shouting as well as hitting, to keep the cougar’s attention away from Tom. Tom got the knife and ran over to Jeb. The cougar was moving its head in and out, trying to find a way through the wall Jeb was making out of his arms. Tom swung with the knife, into the cougar’s back.
