The oil resources which are left will not last very long. This means that all vehicles such as cars, trains, buses, planes and ships that need oil to work will not be able to run. So it will be necessary to develop a new system of transport which uses a fuel more than oil. Electric vehicles are one possibility. In Britain, most families have at least one car and this car is used every day. It could be that only one person in the family drives the car to work or for shopping. The number of cars on the road which are almost empty perhaps helps to explain why the oil is used up so quickly. The family car is a very useful form of transport but it is also a great waste of energy, especially if it is compared with buses or trains. Much petrol is used by a car which is traveling at 120 kilometers an hour. Clearly, it would be better if there were fewer cars on the road and more speed limits so that the oil which is left will last as long as possible.

About 25% of Britain’s total consumption of energy is domestic—it is used only in the home. Just over 20% is used for transport. Most of the energy is used in industry. It is difficult to suggest any possible energy conservation in industry because many of the suggestions would mean that some people would lose their jobs. It is important that industry produces the same amount of products using the same amount of workers.

Obviously, conservation is not going to be the answer to the energy crisis(危机). The most it can do is to give more time for a better solution to be found. The more time which is available for new sources of energy to be developed, the better it is because there is still a lot of work to be done in order to find suitable, safe methods of producing energy.

1.In Britain, what reason could help to explain why oil is used up very quickly?

A.People use cars every day.

B.Most families have at least one car.

C.Many cars on the road are almost empty.

D.Electric vehicles are used.

2.Which of the following is true?

A.Compared with buses and trains, the family car is useful and can save energy.

B.A car driving at the speed of 80 kilometers per hour uses half as much petrol as a car traveling at 160 kilometers per hour.

C.It is possible for people to develop vehicles.

D.Limitation of the number of cars on the road and their speed will help the oil last longer.

3.What does the underlined word “domestic” mean in Paragraph Two?

A.For household use.                      B.On the road.

C.Slow driving.                           D.Fast driving.

4.What is a better way to solve the problem of the energy crisis?

A.Governments should cut down the number of family cars on the road.

B.The speed of vehicles must be limited.

C.New sources of energy should be found and developed.

D.Factories should cut down on production.

Going Zero Waste means more than dealing with the rubbish we create. It means reducing it, too. People who go Zero Waste are careful about what they do. They never take more than they need, they reuse plastic bags, and they make good plans not to buy more than necessary before going shopping.

Kamikatsu, a Japanese village, has already gone Zero Waste. The 2,000 villagers recycle everything possible. There are 34 different boxes at the recycling center! The villagers sometimes just feel unhappy about what they have to do, but they also see the good side.

Let’s think about how to enjoy a Zero Waste Christmas. By sending recyclable cards, we can help our friends and family reduce(减少) waste. And wouldn’t it be better to enjoy the spirit of Christmas with a real tree that can be re-planted in spring?

Going Zero Waste requires us to think more about what happens before and after we act. It is not always easy. But just think how good it would be, both for ourselves and for the earth we live on, if we never had to waste anything.

What is your body language saying to your children? What is their body language telling you? I had the honor of hearing Jan Hargrave speak the other day. She is one of four body language experts in the US. Jan Hargrave says we lie with the right side of our brains, so it is our left hand that gives us away. A person touching his nose, pulling at his ear or rubbing his eye with his left hand might be lying to you. Also, a person who, in any way, crosses any fingers might just be lying. That, she says, is a holdover(遗留物) from childhood, when we crossed our fingers to signal that we didn’t mean what we were saying. When children squint(眨) their eyes, move their body away from you, or can’t seem to make good eye contact, you may need to ask for a little more clarification.

But just as important, children learn early how to read our body language when they are conversing(交谈) with us. Here are some acceptance signals to let them know you are interested when they are talking to you. Lean(倾斜) towards them. Make good eye contact and smile. Open your arms. Let your hands relax with the palms(手掌) showing: an open, upward palm always show acceptance. If your legs are crossed, make sure you are not crossing them away from your child. These are important because they signal to your child that you are focused on them and are accepting and welcoming them into your world.

By paying attention, we can open those lines of important communication with our children and we can see the truth more clearly. I think it would be a mistake to use these tools to lie, but we need to be aware of the signals we are giving so we can show people that they really do matter to us.

1.According to Jan Hargrave, we can tell whether a person is lying by _______.

A.observing his/her left hand’s movements.

B.looking at how he/ she crosses his/ her fingers

C.observing whether he/ she uses body language

D.making good eye contact with him/ her

2.We can learn from the passage that body language _______.

A.is hard to master for children

B.can be understood in different ways

C.may help improve communication

D.is more likely to hide the truth

3.Which of the following does NOT show acceptance to people?

A.Smile while making eye contact.

B.Open your arms to them.

C.Relax your hands with the palms showing.

D.Cross your leg away from them.

4.In the last paragraph, the author seems to suggest that parents_______.

A.spend more time with their children

B.learn to read and use body language

C.pay attention to family communication

D.try to prevent their children from lying
