Many foreign families are delighted to welcome students from other countries to live at their home for their empty rooms can bring them in considerable money. The host families are especially chosen by the universities in accordance with their family background and good reputation. In a way, living with those foreign students has a positive effect on their life. Accommodation is half-board during the week (bed, breakfast and evening meal) and full-board at weekends (bed, breakfast, lunch and evening meal). Host family accommodation, or living with host families, remains popular among so many language travel students.

    Host family accommodation is often seen as the number-one choice for its advantages in language study, cultural communication and cost of living. Staying alongside host families enables students to get enough practice for the short time of their studying so that their language acquisition is likely to become faster. It is a great way to practise their spoken English outside the school. Living in host families also has the advantage for students of being able to spend a lot of time communicating with their “host parents”, and get to know the local way of life, people and culture. It’s a marvelous way to find out how the native people live. A typical family usually encourages them to take part in their family activities, which improves students’ interest in studying the local culture. Another advantage is that host family accommodation can sometimes be the least expensive. For example, most of host families live along a convenient bus mute, so that coming to school each day will not take too long and should not cost too much money. It attracts students for it ensures them a family type of living at a low cost.

While taken as a member of the family, you should be active in doing some housework for your temporary parents like clearing the table after supper, cleaning the house on weekend, mowing the lawn (修剪草坪) after school, shoveling snow (铲雪) in winter through which you can experience the family life and promote your mutual understanding and friendship.

These days, students are becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation, as they come mainly from high socio-economic groups in their own countries. So host families are making efforts to improve the quality of service. They are trying to making living conditions better, including broadband Internet service, private bathroom, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. They will try to make every student have a comfortable room with a desk to study at. They are also trying to provide students with more structured family activities.

It is believed that host family accommodation will keep the popularity vote with language travel students.
