The little boy turned to the old woman next to him, ‘‘Granny, are you sure I don’t have enough money?’’ She nodded. The little boy was still   36  the doll (洋娃娃) in his hand.
I walked toward him,   37  who he wished to give this doll to. “Sister. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring a doll to her.” I told him that maybe Santa Claus would do so. But he replied to me   38  . “No, Santa Claus(圣诞老人) can’t bring it to her   39  she is now. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she   40  there. My sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too,   41  I thought she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister.’’
The little boy looked   42  at me, “I told Daddy to tell Mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall. I   43  she didn’t have to leave me, but Daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister.” Then he looked   44  at the doll with sad eyes.
I quickly   45  for my wallet. “Let’s check again, just in case you do have enough money for the doll!” “OK. I hope I do have enough.” I added some of my money to   46  without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the doll and   47  some spare money. “Thank you God for giving me enough money!” He looked at me and   48 , “I wanted to have enough money to buy a white rose for my Mommy, but I didn’t dare to ask God   49  too much. But He gave me enough to buy the doll and a white rose. My mommy loves white roses.”
50  I remembered a local newspaper article two days ago, mentioning a drunk man in a truck hit a car   51  by a young woman and a little girl. The little girl   52  right away and the mother was   53  in a critical state.
Two days   54  this encounter (偶然相遇) with the little boy, I read in the newspaper that the young   55  had passed away.

Although the man who sat with me in the old wooden stairs thirty-five years ago was not a tall man. But to me, a five-year-old child, he was a giant. I'm going to stay 9 and keep an ear out for the babies, who are still asleep. I'll tell you when it's safe to cross. You go over to the Coke machine get your Coke and walk back and then 10 me to tell you when it's safe to cross back."

I was very nervous when Grandpa 11 my hand tightly. Together we looked up the street and 12 , and back up again. He told me it was safe to cross. He 13 my hand and I ran. I ran as fast as possible The street seemed 14 . I wondered if I would 15 it to the other side. Reaching the other side, I 16 to find Grandpa. still standing exactly where I had left him, 17 proudly. I waved.

Coke in hand, I proudly marched back out into the early evening dusk, seeing Grandpa was waiting 18 .

" Stop right there," he yelled 19 one car was speeding by me, after which Grandpa said" Come on, now," At last I crossed the street safely. He smiled on me, saying “You’ll do that alone from now on”. On hearing this, I 20 felt so proud before.

I was about to join them---when a man’s face __40__ at the light-house window.

This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and __41__ for thirty years. It was stranger still---because I’d seen that __42__ before. I couldn’t place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and __43__ across.

“I know we’ve met before, but I can’t remember where.”

I __44__ him to open his if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass __45__ motionless. Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, __46__ the clouds. How well I’d known that face, sometime, somewhere!

He didn’t reply nor give any __48__ that he’d heard. I went back further, to __49__ I was in the navy.” Perhaps we met at sea during the war,” and that thought at once __50__ him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I’d saved his life once. But surely he…

The motor-boat __51__ her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling. __52__. Laughing, I called, “Now I’ve missed her, and it’s your __53__, Commander!’

As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. __54__ minute it was there, looking up. I could see the whites of the eyes. The __55__ it was gone.

Well, I didn’t rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or ’64. But there’s one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.
