“So teach him to close the door”, my daughter Emma responded after listening to me   36   , again, about the dog coming in from the back door, bringing with him a blast of Buffalo January   37   air.

Teach a dog to close a door behind him? That has got to be a really, really   38    thing to do.But then she took it a step   39   .“Come on Kolby”, she said, grabbing(抓住) some treats and   40   him in front of the open door.“Touch.” And “touch” he did, which moved the door to a   41   position. She   42   him with a treat, smiled, looked at me, and said “see!” And I saw and became   43   .Over the last few days I have been consistent(一致的) with Kolby. Each time he comes in I  44   him back to the open door patiently and ask him to close. There have been   45   in the beginning, but lately more and more successes

However, there remains much work to be done.I have to get him follow my hand signal again and again  46   he will close the door from a distance. But, I now realize, as long as you keep to the   47   , the task will be completed, and, with the way things are progressing,   48   quickly.

What a  49   treat to have a dog that can close the door after himself! Even more wonder can be found in the  50   I learned so clearly from both Emma and Kolby.

A wish is just a wish until you decide to take  51   .Once you   52  the belief that it is “too hard”, then it remains “too hard ” and out of  53  .Once you decide to accomplish a goal, and  54   that it is “easy”, then it becomes “easy” to do what needs to be done.Just  55    doing it.

When students think of learning a foreign language, the first thought is of books, exercises, and audio cassettes. Those are important to learning but sometimes a little bit boring. Therefore, it is time for us to spice things up a bit.

Things like a cellphone can keep your interest level high. It’s a perfect study material. You have it with you day after day, you are familiar with how it works and you can use it to practice whenever you have time. You don’t need to have your books by your side or stay in your room to listen to tapes.

Let’s take a look at how to add your cellphone to your study tools.

Set up your cellphone to use the language you want to study.Go to the menu, find settings, locate language and change it to English or Spanish, which benefits your language learning.

Look at the buttons and connect those items with the new vocabulary. This enables you to master simple words and phrases with little effort. For example, each time you open up your cellphone you’ll see “messages”, “games” and “calls made”.These words begin to take root if you see them again and again.

When you have time, take out your cellphone and start hitting buttons. You’ll be surprised at all the vocabulary you can learn by playing with the different menu items. Some things you’ll recognize immediately and others you can guess just by where you find them.

It can keep your learning fresh and interesting. And that’s important because boredom is a big problem with language learners. You need variety and a cellphone is one way to get it.

If you want to get the most out of the study of a language, you must also read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, and so on. And in reading books of this kind the important thing is to get on with the reading; to try to grasp(理解) what the writer is going to tell you in the book as a whole. This is impossible if you stop and think over the meaning of every single word which happens to be unfamiliar. You can not enjoy a story if you stop half a dozen times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary. You may even prevent yourself from understanding the story as a whole by doing this.

When you are reading books of this kind, therefore, you will usually have to depend mainly on the context (上下文) to help you. If you meet an unfamiliar word, do not let it take too much of your attention from the main idea of the story. In all probability you will meet the same word again a few pages later on in a slightly different context, and each time you see it that your understanding of it will become more exact.

1.The phrase “to get on with reading” in the first passage has the same meaning as “_________”.

A.to try to grasp the meaning of every sentence in the book

B.to try to catch the meaning of every word in the book

C.to try to understand all the writer is going to tell you

D.to try to understand the main idea of the book

2.When you meet new words in reading such kinds of books, you’d better _________.

A.stop and look them up in a dictionary

B.stop and think them over

C.try to guess their meanings from the context

D.have none of them

3.From the passage the best way to read novels, plays and travel books is         .

A.to read very slowly

B.to read quickly and not too carefully

C.to read very carefully

D.to read very seriously

4..What is the passage’s main idea?

A.You can learn a lot from the study of a language.

B.Guess words’ meanings according to context.

C.Reading for pleasure is important.

D.Reading skills for books like novels, plays and so on
