Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He enjoyed drawing as a child. His first connection
with paintings came in 1869. He worked for an art dealer(经营者) in London and Paris for four
years before he became a teacher in England for a short time. He moved back to France in 1877
and soon began to paint. He didn't stay long in Paris. He was attracted by the colors of the countryside,
and in 1888, he moved to Ales, a small town in the south of France. There, he painted his most famous
paintings.
He enjoyed painting people, farms, flowers, and other natural things. Some of his most famous
paintings are The Potato Eaters, the Starry Night, and several different Sunflower paintings. The
Starry Night is now kept in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. There is a quiet village and
a tall black tree under an angry sky. Some people say that it shows a war in Van Gogh's mind between
peace and anger. It was finished on June 19, 1889. Scientists say that it is a true picture of the stars on
that day.
He was poor most of his life. He painted hundreds of paintings, but only sold one of them when he
was alive. He was a lonely, unhappy man who died at the early age of 37.
Today, people love Van Gogh's use of color and the emotional power(激情) of his work. Van Gogh's
paintings are world-famous and worth millions of dollars.
Museums around the world proudly show paintings painted by the great artist.

English idioms are interesting. An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of
each word. For example, if an American boy asks his mom what's for dinner tomorrow, she may say
"I'll play it by ear", that means she doesn't have plans for dinner and she will decide later.
"Play it by ear" used to mean playing music without using the music (乐谱), but now people often
use it when they're not talking about music!
There are many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be much more
vivid (生动的) and colorful.
Have you ever heard the idiom "He bought the farm?" It means he died. Do you know how it
became popular? It was first used in World War I. When a soldier died, the government gave his
family enough money to buy a farm.
In the early 1930s, people in the US often did not know when or where their next meal was. So
as soon as they got something in their hand that could be eaten, it would go into their mouth. That
was how people began to use the idiom "living hand to mouth" to mean "living a poor life".
And don't be angry if your English friend says this to you, "Break a leg in your game!" He is
wishing you good luck! Hundreds of years ago, people believed in sprites (小妖精). Sprites enjoyed
causing trouble. If the sprites heard you ask for something, they would make the opposite happen.
Tell someone to "break a leg" and the sprites would make something good happen.
Aren't English idioms interesting? And break a leg in your next football match!

For hundreds of years, the British people have remembered their mothers on Mothering Sunday. In the old days, workers had time off from work to visit their mothers.

Today, most people in Britain call Mothering Sunday“Mother's Day.”Children send cards to their mothers on that day. They give their mothers flowers or sweets as presents.Fathers and children do all the cooking and housework to give mothers a rest. They do their best to show their love for them.

In the USA,mothers are remembered on Mother's Day,too.Mother's Day started quite differently from the way it started in Britain.

Mrs Ann Reeves Jarvis wanted the people to make friends with each other again,so she started“Mother's Friendship Day.”On that day,she visited all the other mothers in her town and said。“God bless you.Let's be friends with each other again.”

Her idea succeeded. The same thing happened in other parts of the country.Soon, all the women in the United States followed her example. After Mrs Jarvis died.her daughter carried on the same idea, but she called“Mother's Friendship Day”as“Mother's Day”.The first Mother's Day was in 1908.In 1914,Mother's Day,the second Sunday in May,became a public holiday. On that day, every public building in the USA flies the American national flag.
