You probably know that every language has (1) own words, or vocabulary. If you want to learn a foreign language, you must learn its (2) . (3) our word“cat”is“chat”in French and“Kate”in German. You must learn what the words (4) , and you must say them in the right way. Words are made up of sounds and different languages have (5) sounds. There are hundreds of language sounds. When you speak English, you are using only about fifty of them.

　　Have you ever heard a foreign language spoken (6) television? Did it seem as it was spoken very fast? Maybe it was. Some languages are spoken faster than (7) . English is spoken (8) than French. French people speak about 350 syllables（音节）per minute. As English, we speak 220.

　　This year 1 twenty-three hundred teenagers from all over the world will spend about ten months in U. S. 2 . They will attend U. S, schools, meet U. S. teenagers, and form 3 of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new 4 and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.

　　Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. 5 , George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.

　　Fred, a lively young man; knew little German when he arrived, but after two months' study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected－much 6 .
