resources(资源) on Earth. To protect these resources, we need to keep the air clean and the water
drinkable. We need to keep the soil (土壤)healthy. How do we do that?
Protect the land
The soil that covers fields and farms provides much of the food we eat. Human activities such as
plowing(耕) fields, mining(采矿), and building highways can destroy (破坏)the land. Erosion happen
when wind and water carry away the soil. Soil erosion can turn rich farmland into a desert wasteland.
So does this mean we shouldn't build a highway or plow a field? Of course not. But it does mean we
might think about Earth-friendly ways of doing those things.
Today farmers plow their fields in different ways to prevent erosion. They try to use less water for their
crops. They keep animals from eating the growing grass in just one area. Farmers also plant trees to
prevent erosion from happening.
Save the Trees
Another human activity that damages the land is deforestation(采伐森林). People take away a large
number of trees from a forest. Millions of square kilometers of forest disappear each year. When this
happens, many plants and animals lose their places to live. They may die out, or become very few.
Scientists haven't even discovered all the living things in the forest. We may be losing some without even
knowing they are there. Trees absorb (吸收)and use carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)when they make food.
Environmentalists encourage careful management of the forests. They ask people to replant trees after
they cut down the forest.
Recycle, Reuse, Reduce
People throw a piece of paper into the wastebasket after using it. The paper becomes trash. Where
does the trash go next? Much of our trash ends up in landfills(垃圾填埋地). They take up valuable land
and sometimes pollute the water, air, and land around them. More than a third of the trash in landfills is
paper. Recycling, reusing, and reducing what you throw away can cut down on the need for more landfills. In fact, we can recycle about eighty percent of household trash.

In nature, you may see many insects (昆虫)and animals of different colors. Have you ever wondered why?
Locusts are super delicious food for birds, but it is not always an easy job for birds to catch them.It is neither because locusts are good jumpers or runners nor because they are smarter than their enemies. The reason is that the colors of locusts change with the colors of crops(庄稼). When crops are young, locusts look green. But when autumn comes, locusts change to the yellow and brown color as crops do.
Brown bears, tigers and other animals move quietly through forests. They can’t be seen easily by their enemies. This is because they have colors similar to the trees. For the same reason, polar bears that live on a land of snow and ice are white. Butterflies and bees living among the flowers are colorful like flowers. Soil insects are mostly dark-colored and they live under the soil(土壤) in a dark and wet environment. However, insects with colors different from plants can easily be found and eaten by others. So in order to survive, they have to hide themselves in the daytime and appear only at night.
Have you ever noticed some even stranger acts? The ink fish in the sea can send out some very black ink when it faces danger. As the ink spreads over , its enemies will find themselves suddenly in a dark world. At the same time the ink fish immediately swims away. That is how it keeps itself safe though it is not strong at all.

There are seas, lakes and forests on the earth. There are cities, towns and farms, 1 . All these things are environments(环境). The environment is everything around you. It can be living(有生命的), like a forest. It can be non-living(无生命的), 2 a rock or a mountain.
No living thing can live 3 . Every living thing depends(依靠) on 4 things in its environment. When something 5 , it affects(影响) something else. If a non-living thing like water becomes 6 to find, plants will be affected. If all plants 7 , the animals that eat plants will be affected.
Weather, such as(例如) temperature, wind and rain, can change an environment. 8 can change an environment, too. Some things that people do cause(引起) 9 change or only a small change in the environment. For example, people can 10 the forest and just travel around. They can cut down only a few trees and 11 change the environment very much. On the other hand(另一方面), some things that people do cause 12 change. Sometimes they can change 13 environment by cutting down a forest.
14 changes are bad. If we cut down a forest to build houses or plant crops(庄稼), this may not be 15 . But what would happen if we cut down all trees in all forests 16 these things or if we didn't 17 some and plant something else?
It is clear that people are able to 18 an environment. This is why it is important to think about the changes before we make 19 . Let's all work together to 20 it clean and healthy.
