There was once an old farmer with a horse. He used the horse to pull a plow( 犁 ) so that he could plow his field. He used him to pull a cart ( 马车 ).Sometimes he used him to ride to market. They are good friends.

One day the farmer found there was something wrong with his horse. He was very sick.. The farmer called a vet and ask him to come and looked over his sick horse.

“He is a very good horse.” The farmer said to the vet “I can’t do anything on the farm without him. Please make him better for me. He doesn’t want to stand up, and he doesn’t want to eat, either. Is he going to die?”

  “I don’t know yet,” the vet said. “I’ll tell you after I’ve examined him.”

The vet examined the horse, and then said, “You are lucky. There is nothing wrong with him. Give him one of these pills twice a day. He will soon be better.” He gave the farmer a box of large pills.

The farmer looked at them and said, “But my horse won’t eat. How can I make him swallow(吞) the pills?”

The vet said,” Get a tube. Put a pill in the tube. Put one end of the tube in the horse’s mouth and the other end in your own. Then blow hard. The pill will shoot out of the tube and go down the horse’s throat.”

“Ok,” the old farmer said happily.

“Oh, my dear vet, My horse blew first!” The old farmer said sadly.

Amy was a dear little girl, but she was too ready to waste time in getting ready to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she ought to.

In the village in which she lived, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruit of all kinds, including berries in their season. One day he said to Amy, whose parents were quite poor, “Would you like to earn some money?”
