Do you often travel? Travelling by plane is very fast. With a modern airliner(航线)you can travel in one day to many places in the world.
Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but you can see the country when you are travelling by train. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. You feel good about your trip.
Some people like to travel by sea. There are large liners(邮轮)and river boats. You can visit many other countries and different parts of your country on them. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but travelling by sea is a very great way to go on holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable(时刻表). You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles in a day, just as you like. You can stop anywhere (任何地方)you wish---a beautiful place to see, a good restaurant to enjoy a meal, or at a hotel to spend the night. So travelling by car is very popular.

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(自然资源).Many of the world's great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it.Rivers play an important part in the lives of its people.

Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile.To the people of India, the Ganges(恒河)is great, but it is also important for transportation; ship can travel along it for a thousand miles.Other great rivers are the Congo(刚果河)in Africa and the Mekong(湄公河)in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon(亚马逊河)in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.

Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam(大坝)across a river and let a lake form behind the dam.The people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉)their fields but also make electricity for their homes and industries.

However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials.People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of this natural resource.

There are few families in the United States that do not have either a radio or television set. Both of them have become a necessary part of our daily life, keeping us filled with the news of the day, teaching us in many fields of interest, and making us happy with singing, dancing and acting.
Marconl, the Italian inventor, who gave us the radio, probably didn’t know how much his great invention would have done for the world in the years to come. Radio had, perhaps done as much as any other communication tool. Things of the world can be reported to people everywhere a few seconds after they happen. Travelers in or out of–the–way places, ships at sea even astronauts round the earth are able to keep in touch with each other by radio.
Television is another important invention. It lets us see as well as hear the actor. Since its appearance, TV has done a great deal in the daily life of people everywhere. Many programs are now televised in color.
Perhaps the most modern invention is “Telstar”, a “star” moving round the earth. It makes it possible for the people all over the world to be closer than ever before.
