My name is Jim Stone. Yesterday I left the house at about three o'clock in the afternoon and didn't get home until 5: 30. I went to see a friend of mine. My friend, Nancy Smith, was ill in hospital. She had to stay there for a long time.

We talked about some different subjects. We talked about the weather and we talked about our old friends. I asked her if she knew anybody in New York. I asked a lot of questions. She answered all of my questions. Then she asked me if I spoke French, and! said I spoke a little French. She wanted to know if I spoke French with an American accent(口音), and I said I did. Then she asked me if I knew anybody in Paris. I said I had four or five friends in Pads. I answered almost all of her questions.

Finally, I asked her if she wanted to watch television for a while, and she said she did. So I said I had to leave, and then I said good-bye. She asked me when I was coming back to visit her, and I said I didn't know but I would.

She said good-bye and I left the hospital at about 5:00 p. m.

Once upon a time there lived a poor farmer called Smith. He didn't like to share things with others.Smith had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.

One day,his friend gave Smith a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it.The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home,he did not know where to plant it.

He thought and thought. Finally at night he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it.But without sunlight or good soil, the tree soon died.

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place.

“What's the difference?”the farmer said angrily.“If I had planted it near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted it in one of my fields,my neighbours would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house,my own children would have taken the fruit.”

“Yes,”said the friend,“but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have got nothing, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree.”

"Can I see my baby?" asked the happy new mother. When the baby was in her arms, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The baby was born without ears.
Time proved(证明) that the baby’s hearing was very good though he had no ears. He got on well with his classmates. But one day, he said to his mother, tears in his eyes, "A big boy called me a freak (畸形的)."

"I do not believe you could, "said the father." The agreement was that you are not to know...not yet."
