Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives, and not too long ago, I had one that I would like
to share.
This story began with a sailing trip. It's a story of pizza (比萨), sailing and being afraid of buying
ice-cream with a US $20 bill.
I was going to Marblehead, Massachusetts, with my Optimist (a sailboat) racing team for the New
England Optimist Championship.
The team was racing down the highway at 85mph (miles per hour) when we all realized we were hungry.
Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I was very excited, because I had a new US $20 bill. I was so excited
because I had never had that kind of money before. I had money I had saved, but spending it on food seemed
like throwing it away.
We all rushed into the pizza line. Finally I got a cheese pizza and drink, and walked to my table.
About halfway through the meal, I realized I had not actually handed my money to the cashier (收银员). I
had just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.
My conscience (良知) opened its mouth and swallowed me. I couldn't get over it. I just couldn't go back
to the cashier and pay for my stolen, half-eaten pizza. I would be more embarrassed than I ever had been.
I was so sorry that I refused to give myself the pleasure of an ice-cream in fear that someone would say,
"Hey, Jeff, why don't you use the change from the pizza instead of that nice, new US $20 bill?" I was not so
proud of my money now.
For the next two years, whenever I was reminded of (thought of) the "Pizza incident," I closed my eyes
and said to myself, "Don't think about it. Don't think about it." I have learned two things from this experience.
Maybe I was an unwise person for giving in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a free pizza.
But I think the real lesson is that if you let being embarrassed get in the way of doing the right thing, then your
conscience will catch up with you.
I think this reflects the saying, "A coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one." I was a coward
and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a "hero" and gone back up to
pay for the pizza, then I would have felt a little embarrassed about it only once, or maybe twice.
1. Why didn't the boy buy ice-cream?
A. He wanted to save the money.
B. He didn't want to eat ice-cream then.
C. He didn't have enough money for it.
D. He was afraid that someone would find out the fact.
2._________ pay for the pizza with his money at first.
A. In order to keep the bill, he didn't
B. He completely forgot to
C. His teammates told him not to
D. The cashier didn't ask him to
3. The underlined word "embarrassed" in the passage means _________.
A. happy and comfortable
B. disturbed and silly
C. uneasy and uncomfortable
D. sad and angry
4. Why did the writer think of the saying "A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one"?
A. He used to be a coward then but is not now.
B. He had a long terrible time for his stolen pizza.
C. He would have been a hero if he had paid for the pizza.
D. He wanted to die once like a hero.

It was midday when I got the call that my grandfather was not well and he was quickly getting worse. My family did not know how long he would stay in the world. I knew I had to get to the hospital to tell him how much I loved him. As I drove to the hospital, I pictured him before I got to tell him how much he meant to me. Trying to fight back the tears, I wanted to stay calm when I saw him.
When I got to the hospital, I hurriedly looked for his hospital room. I found him in a semi-conscious state (半清醒状态). On my knees, I said softly, “Hello, Grandpa.”
Still feeling shy, I decided not to leave his bedside without letting him know. While I asked about how he was, he told me, “I’ll be fine, Henry.” although we both knew that wasn't true. Then he asked me with a smile how I was doing.
Hearing what my grandpa said, I was much moved. I made the decision that I had to show my gratitude for him. As I found all the courage (勇气) I had, I hold his hand tightly. I cried out, “Grandpa. I just want to let you know how much I love you. I hope you already know that yet I just want to make sure.” By this time, tears were rolling down my face. All those years of love that I had shut and not let him know, became free.
Smilingly, he said, “I know. Thank you for telling me that. All I have on this planet is my family and my love for them. If there is anything I could ask of you, I want you to be good to your family, your mother, your father, and your brother. That’s all I want of you.”
What I learned that day changed my whole life. From then on, I began telling people how much I love them, care for them, and respect them. I get in touch with, for example, my babysitter, my barber, to show my appreciation. I go down into the city once a week and serve pizza to the homeless. I wake up every morning and list everything I’m thankful to in my life.

What do you do if you're in trouble on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

Body signals (信号)

Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training, When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means, "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend (弯曲) your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a tire unless you're sure that it can’t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

Ground-to-air signals

It's a good idea lo build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:

F "I need food and water"

II "I need medicine."

I "I am badly hurt."

X "I am unable lo move from here."

Pilots' replies

If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means: "message received and understood" (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received hut not understood" (At night, the: pilot flashes the plants red lights.)

However, there is no signal which means "message not received. Why not'?

1.How many signals can we use to draw the attention of the passing plane if you're in trouble?

  A. Three.        B. Four       C. Five      D. Six

2.Which picture means "it's not safe to land"?

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Swinging your arm from side to side means "yes"

B. If the ground is dark, light smoke can’t be seen.

C If you need some medicine, make a symbol “Ⅱ”.

D. The pilots make replies with a blue light at night.

4.What is the passage mainly about?

A. The explanation of building signals on an island.

B. The importance of making signals on an island.

C. Ways of sending out signals on a lonely island.

D. Ways of receiving signals from a lonely island.

When we talk about intelligence(智力),we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school.By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving(表现),especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence,we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all can be,and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.Probably he isn’t sure how it will all work out,but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right,he doesn’t feel ashamed(羞愧)that he failed,he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(看法)on life,a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you’ll see the great differences between what we call “bright” children and “non-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life, and he tries to get in touch with everything around him; while the unintelligent(不聪明的) child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world:he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.
