Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new house in Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I wanted very much to see his new place and meet his friends.
In my earliest memories my father was a tall, handsome and successful man. He loved his work and family, but was uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I was afraid of him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s in my study and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to try hard to think up things to say to protect myself.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny talks. My father’s critical(挑剔的)air and strict rules were gone. He seemed so friendly and interesting to be with us.
The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me many stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in so doing, I’m happy with my new friend. My dad, in this new home in Arizona, is back to me from where he was.

In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill.
In this study, Cohen’s interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers about were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days.
The results showed that everyone in the study was equally(相等地) likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illness are less serious and lasted for a shorter time.
Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried abut your health, look on the bright side more often.

Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you've both had a lot of fun these two years. You have been to many picnics and had all
kinds of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you eat. But I also know that it hasn't
always been easy for you and Mom. So now I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our
family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me-about how I'd make my way in the world,
become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with those
smiles and suddenly, all my big plans didn't seem so important any more. I soon found that the greatest
happiness in my life was that you were so happy. And 1 realized that my own life wouldn't mean much if
I couldn't make you two happy. In the end, girls, I ran for (竞选) President: because of what I want for you
and for every child in the US.
I want all our children to go to school so that they can learn and grow. I want them to have the chance
to go to college-even though their parents don't have enough money. And I want them to get good jobs.
I want us to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our earth cleaner and
safer. And I want us to see no difference of different colors and areas because we are all equal (平等的).
I hope both of you will start to give others the chances you've had. You know, this country has given
our family so much, so you have to, and really should, give something back. When you are doing something
larger than yourself, you will realize how helpful you are.
These are the things I want for you-to grow up in a world in which you can make your dreams come
true. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and get what you girls
have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure.
I am so proud of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am thankful every day because
you behave so well when we get ready to start our new life together in the White House.
