The Story of Harriet Quimby
Should a woman fly an airplane? Most people in the early 1900' s said no. A woman named Harriet Quimby lived during those years. Harriet loved airplanes. She made up her mind to fly one.
She found someone to teach her, and soon she became a good pilot(飞行员) . In 1912, Harriet made a plan. She would fly from England to France, 22 miles across the water. No woman had ever done that.
Her friends told her not to go. Flying was dangerous in those days. Airplanes were small. They were made of wood and bicycle wheels. Sometimes they fell apart in the air.
Harriet wasn' t worried. On April 16, 1912, she was ready to go. She started her plane and took off. She climbed to 1500 feet and turned toward France. She looked down. Everything was covered with fog! Harriet kept going. She thought she might be over land. She let the plane drop lower. Then the fog cleared. A sandy beach was below her. Harriet landed right on the beach. She was in France. The trip had taken only 30 minutes.
“Any woman could do it, ” said Harriet.
