When his mother came in, 45 shouting at him, she said, “Robert, what a great mess(一团糟) you have made! I have never seen such a big puddle(水坑) of milk. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes 46 we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “Robert, when you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up at last. So, 47 would you like to do that? We would use a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the towel and together they cleaned up the milk.
His mother then said, “We had a failed 48 in how to carry a big milk bottle with two small hands in the kitchen. Let’s go out and fill the bottle with water and see if you can 49 a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip(杯口) with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.
This scientist then said that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to

I heard a story about a famous scientist who had made several very important achievements.

Eating in space is different from eating on the earth. The food that astronauts carry with them does not look like the food you eat.
Some food is carried in closed bags. It is cooked and frozen before the astronauts get it. All the water is removed from the food. In the spaceship, the astronaut puts the water back. He “shoots” hot or cold water into the food bag with a special gun. He eats the food through a small hole in the bag.
Other foods come in bite sizes. The astronaut puts a whole piece in his mouth at once. There can be no crumbs. Crumbs would float around the spaceship and get in the way. Meat and cakes often come in bite-size pieces.
Astronauts cannot drink water from open cups. The water would float in drops in the spaceship. The water is put in the special gun. The astronaut shoots the water into his mouth.
【小题1】Some food carried in the closed bags by astronauts is ________.

【小题2】Astronauts can’t drink from open cups because__________.
A. the water would float in drops around the spaceship
B. the water would spill all over their foods

【小题3】The main idea of the passage is that __________.
A. astronauts cannot eat or drink in a spaceship until they come back to the earth
B. eating and drinking in the spaceship is a special problem
C. there is more food and water in space than on the earth
Laboratory work is your chance to learn science first-hand. It can be fun but you must be careful to prevent injury. Listen closely when your teacher reads and explains the rules before your first lab lesson.
LABORATORY RULES | |
Throughout the lesson | Do not enter the science lab without the teacher’s permission. No food or drinks are to be allowed in the science lab. |
Before the Experiment | Read all instructions carefully before every experiment. Prepare all apparatus (仪器) and arrange them so that you will not knock them over while doing the experiment. |
During the Experiment | If you are unsure of how to use any apparatus or how to operate, ask your teacher for help. Never smell or taste chemicals unless your teacher gives permission. |
After the Experiment | Wash all apparatus after use and return them to the places where they were. Throw waste materials in proper waste baskets. |
First Aid | Report all accidents to your teacher immediately. If you spill (溅出) any chemicals onto your body of clothing, wash with plenty of water and report to your teacher. |
A.before | B.since | C.during | D.after |
A.taste the chemicals first |
B.clean all the apparatus |
C.read all instructions carefully |
D.report all the accidents to the teacher |
A.try them on your own | B.put them back |
C.ask your teacher for help | D.read the rules carefully |
A.bring food into the lab |
B.enter the lab anytime |
C.smell chemicals as you like |
D.learn science directly in the lab |
A.Before the Experiment | B.First Aid |
C.During the Experiment | D.After the Experiment |
We were very 27 . We said good-bye and went on our way.
But at home we often 28 our loved ones in a different way.
Later that day, while I was cooking the evening meal, my daughter stood beside me very quietly. When I turned, I nearly 29 her down. “Move out of the way.” I shouted. She walked away, tears (眼泪) in her eyes.
While I lay awake in bed, I realized how 30 I’d spoken. So I decided to get up to say sorry to my daughter. On the way to her bedroom, to my surprise, I found some 31 by the door of the kitchen. At that time my tears began to fall. I quietly went and got down on my knees by her 32 . She woke up and put her arms around my neck when I kissed her. Then I asked, “Did you pick these flowers for me?”
She smiled, “I found them out by the tree. I picked them 33 they're pretty like you. I knew you’d like them. I stood quietly in order to give you a surprise.”“Oh dear, I'm really sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldn’t have shouted at you.”
“ That’s okay. Mom. I 34 you anyway.”
I suddenly realized what a clever way it is to explain the word 35 like this: (F) ather (A) nd (M) other, (I) (L) ove (Y) ou!
