seasons were "Spring, Summer, Fairtime and Winter!" At that time, a week-long fair was held in the
town every autumn. Thousands of people from other towns came to sell and buy things. It was the
busiest time of the year.
When "Fairtime" came, my grandma became the most "useful" and busiest person of the family.
Grandma was a kind, well-educated old lady. She was good at cooking. All her rrelatives liked the
foodshe cooked. During "fairtime", they would come to live in her house and have meals there.
Grandma was always happy to look after them.
Year after year, many people moved to big cities. There was no loner "Fairtime". Grandma became
very old and was gradually going blind. My parents and I moved to live with Granma in her house. We
did our best to make her day-to-day life as comfortable as possible. I was at high school then. What I
often did at home was to help Grandma with the daily newspaper's crossword puzzle. However, she
didn't look happy. She often sat in her room for hours, without saying a word.
To attract people to move back, the Town Hall decided to reopen the Fair. One day, when I came
back room school, I saw Grandma wearing her glasses, washing the dishes in the kitchen. With a big
smile on her face, she looked a lot much younger. She told me that her two nieces would come. "They
said the food I cooked was very delicious and they want to stay in my house again." Grandma said
happily. "They will stay here for one week and we can have a big party. That must be the busiest week
I've had in years!"
I suddenly realized that Grandma didn't want to be looked after. She wanted to be "useful",
appreciated and helpful.

I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food festival”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!

When Peter and Rose Malupa came to the United States from the Philippines, they lived in an apartment in the center of Chicago. Rose worked as an accountant (会计) in a downtown bank.
After looking for a long time, Peter and Rose bought a house in the suburbs(郊区).
One morning, Mrs. Todd, the Malupas, next-door neighbor, stopped by to meet Rose, “Welcome to the neighborhood. We'd like to invite you and your husband to our home this Saturday evening. We want you to meet all the neighbors.”
On Saturday night, at 7 o'clock Peter and Rose walked to the Todds' home. Lots of people were at the party. Several people congratulated Rose and Peter on their new home.
About 8:30, Peter walked over to Rose and asked, “when will they serve dinner? I'm really hungry.”
“I don't know,” Rose answered. “I'm hungry, too. Maybe they like to eat late.”
At 9:15, everyone was still standing, talking and enjoying the refreshments(点心). Peter was feeling weak. He was so hungry. Rose brought Peter a bowl of crackers(饼干) and some cheese. By 10 o'clock, Peter was sick of crackers. And he was still very hungry.
Some guests started leaving, Peter and Rose were surprised. One guest said to Mr. Todd, “Thanks for inviting us to the party. We had a good time.”
Then Rose realized her mistake. She whispered to Peter, “This is a neighborhood party, not a dinner party. I made a mistake. All the other guests ate dinner before they came here.”
Peter and Rose quickly thanked the Todds for the party. They grabbed (取下) their coats and left. They walked back home, got into their car and drove to a nearby shopping center. The Italian restaurant was closed and the Chinese restaurant was closed. “What are we going to do?” Peter asked.
