Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you've visited, or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.
In fact, it's likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen―the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.
Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.
The key question is:Does that matter?
For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no”.
When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me".
But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy.Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon(优惠券). But privacy does matter at least sometimes. It's like health. When you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it's gone do you wish you'd done more to protect it.
59. What does the author mean by saying “the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked” (Lines 3-4, Para. 2)?
A. People’s personal information easily accessed without their knowledge.
B. In the 21st century people try every means to look into others’ secrets.
C. People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.
D. Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

Long after the 1998 World Cup was won, disappointed fans were still cursing the disputed refereeing (裁判) decisions that denied victory to their team. A researcher was appointed to study the performance of some top referees.
The researcher organized an experimental tournament (锦标赛) involving four youth teams. Each match lasted an hour, divided into three periods of 20 minutes during which different referees were in charge.
Observers noted down the referees' errors. of which there were 61 over the tournament. Converted to a standard match of 90 minutes, each referee made almost 23 mistakes, a remarkably high number. The researcher then studied the videotapes to analyze the matches in detail. Surprisingly, he found that errors were more likely when the referees were close to the incident.
When the officials got it right, they were, on average, 17 meters away from the action. The average distance in the case of errors was 12 meters. The research shows the optimum (最佳的) distance is about 20 meters.
There also seemed to be an optimum speed. Correct decisions came when the referees were moving at a speed of about 2 meters per second. The average speed for errors was 4 meters per second.
If FIFA, football's international ruling body, wants to improve the standard of refereeing at the next World Cup, it should encourage referees to keep their eyes on the action from a distance, rather than rushing to keep up with the ball, the researcher argues.
He also says that FIFA's insistence that referees should retire at age 45 may be misguided. If keeping up with the action is not so important, their physical condition is less critical.
64. The experiment conducted by the researcher was meant to ________.
A. review the decisions of referees at the 1 9 98 World Cup
B. analyze the causes of errors made by football referees
C. set a standard for football refereeing
D. encourage referees

B. higher than in the 1998 World Cup
C. quite unexpected
D. as high as in a standard match

66. The findings of the experiment show that _________.
A. errors are more likely when a referee keeps close to the ball
B. the farther the referee is from the incident, the fewer the errors
C. the more slowly the referee runs, the more likely will errors occur
D. errors are less likely when a referee stays in one Spot
【解析】A. 本题涉及实验结果,第四段第二句即是本题答案依据。
67. The underlined word “officials” (Para.4)most probably refers to“
A. the researchers involved in the experiment
B. the inspectors of the football tournament
C. the referees of the football tournament
D. the observers at the site of the experiment
【解析】C. 短语的理解不仅要基于上下文,也要紧扣短文主题,不论是上下文还是结合短文主题,这里的officials都应该指referees.

B. Age should not be the chief consideration in choosing a football referee.
C. A football referee should be as young and energetic as possible.

WASHINGTON―The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday denied California and 16 other states the right to set their own standards for carbon dioxide emissions (排放) from automobiles.
The E.P.A. administrator, Stephen L. Johnson, said the proposed
The decision immediately provoked
a heated debate over its scientific basis and whether political pressure was
applied by the automobile industry to help it escape the proposed
In an evening conference call with reporters, Mr. Johnson defended his agency's decision.
“The Bush administration is moving forward with a clear national solution, not a confusing patchwork of state rules,” he said. “I believe this is a better approach than if individual states were to act alone."
The 17 states―including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut―had waited two years for the Bush administration to issue a ruling on an application to set stricter air quality standards than those adopted by the federal government. The decision technically known as a Clean Air Act waiver, was the first time California was refused permission to carry out its own pollution rules; the federal government had previously granted the state more than 50 waivers(弃权声明书).
The emissions standards California proposed in 2004―but never approved by the federal government―would have forced automakers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent in new cars and light trucks by 2020, with the cutbacks to begin in 1990 models.
