第一节 阅读下面五篇短文,从每题后所给的四个选项中选出最佳答案。

A

My father had returned from his business visit to London when I came in, rather late, to supper. I could tell at once that he and my mother had been discussing something. In that half-playful, half-serious way I knew so well, he said," How would you like to go to Eton?"

"You bet, "I cried quickly catching the joke. Everyone knew it was the most expensive, the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before. Besides, even at 12 or 13, I understood my father. He disliked any form of showing off. He always knew his proper station in life, which was in the middle of the middle class, our house was medium-sized; he had avoided joining Royal Liverpool Golf Club and went to a smaller one instead; though once he had got a second-hand Rolls-Royce at a remarkably low price, he felt embarrassed driving it, and quickly changed it for an Austin 1100.

This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped. Alas! I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict(冲突)with his fear of drawing attention to himself.

It seemed that he had happened to be talking to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remember my eyes stinging(刺痛)and my hands shaking with the puzzlement of my feelings. There was excitement, at the heart of great sadness.

"Oh, he doesn't want to go away," said my mother, "You shouldn't go on like this.” "It's up to him," said my father. "He can make up his own mind.”

    A. it made him feel uneasy                         B. it was too old to work well

    C. it was too expensive to possess                     D. it was too cheap

43. What was the writer's reaction to the idea of going to Eton?

    A. He was very unhappy.                         B. He didn't believe it.

    C. He was delighted.                             D. He had mixed feelings.

44. We can know from the passage that _______.

    A. Children who can go to Eton are very famous      B. Children can go to Eton if they will

    C. It is very difficult for a child to get admitted by Eton

D. Children don't have the right to decide whether they will go to Eton

B

A Battery's Worst Nightmare(噩梦)

Portable electronics that can be carried about easily are only as good as their batteries and, let's face it, batteries aren't very good, especially when compared with, say, petrol, which packs 100 times a battery's energy into an equal space. That's why a large group of mechanical engineers(centered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with partners at other universities and companies) are hard at work in an effort to replace batteries with a tiny engine that runs on fuel. Imagine a battery-free life! When the fuel runs out in your laptop or mobile phone, you just fill up and go.

The engine----about the size of a ten-cent coin----starts with a combustion chamber(燃烧室)that burns hydrogen(氢).Its tiny parts are etched onto silicon wafers(硅片)in the same manner that computer parts are imprinted onto integrated circuits(集成电路).The first engine is made up of five wafers. And since these wafers could be produced in much the same way as computer chips, they could probably be produced quite cheaply.

But the devil in all this nice detail is efficiency(效率).Tiny engine parts don't always behave like their scaled-up parts of the first engine. Something between the parts can slow down the works, according to Columbia University professor Luc Frechette, one of the engine's designers. Extreme heat from the combustion chamber is also a problem, often leaking to other parts of the engine.

The scientists' goal is to create an engine that will operate at 10 percent efficiency---that is,10 times better than batteries operate. Frechette says that a complete system, with all parts of place and working, will be set up in the next couple of years, but commercial models aren't like until at least the end of the next ten years.

45. According to the passage, the title suggests that _______.

    A. batteries should be greatly improved         B. petrol will be used instead of batteries

    C. the time of batteries will be gone forever     D. pollution caused by batteries must be solved

46. What's the meaning of the underlined word" devil" in paragraph 3?

    A. problem            B. advantage          C. invention           D. technique

47. What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The new invention doesn't need any fuel.

    B. The new engine has been produced in quantity.

    C. The new invention is much cheaper than the battery.

    D. The new engine needs to be improved before it's on sale.

48 What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. To introduce a new invention to readers.

B. To persuade readers not to use batteries.

C. To show us how the new invention works.

D. To declare when the engine will be on sale.

C

Beijing----The two-day Asia-Europe Meeting(ASEM)is expected to sign important documents today when it closes in Beijing.

The meeting is a timely call for leaders from the two continents to find a solution to lift their countries,if not the world, out of the present global financial crisis(dangerous situation).

Europe has been more determined than the United States to get rid of the world’s present  economic system. It wants to build a new,or second-generation system.

Asia and Europe built a new, equal partnership in 1996 when the first ASEM was held.

The ASEM has 45 members that account for 57 percent of the world’s population.Their foreign trade makes up more than 60 percent of the world’s trade.

In 1997,when Asia was hit by a financial crisis, the second ASEM in 1998 attempted to  support its Asian members. The establishment of the ASEM Asian Financial Crisis Response Trust  Fund helped these countries to rebuild financial system and remove the influence on their  societies.

The present financial crisis has affected more countries than the 1997 one.It is expected to  inflict a heavy blow on the world.

ASEM is not good at dealing with financial problems.Still, developed and developing  countries of the ASEM think differently about solutions to the financial crisis. It is widely known  that the European Union is divided over the issue.

As a result,it is unrealistic to expect a cure-all for the crisis from the Beijing ASEM.Ding Yuanhong, former China ASEM senior official, said that without the presence of the US no plans  are practical. But the ASEM can serve as a platform for the two continents to communicate and  exchange ideas.

Their leaders can compare notes and pool their wisdom.

The most important thing is the message of confidence the meeting is expected to deliver to  the world.

                                              (China Daily 10/25/2008)

49. When did ASEM come into being?

      A.In 1996.               B.In 1997.               C.In l998.                D.In 2005.

50.What can we know about the USA from the passage?

A.It will attend the next ASEM.

B.It plays an important role in ASEM.

C.It helped the Asian countries a lot in the 1997 financial crisis.

D.It hasn’t been ready to change the present economic system yet.

51.Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “inflict”?

      A.get                  B.give                 C.increase                 D.influence

52.From the news we can learn that _______.

      A. the EU countries think differently about the solutions to the financial crisis

      B. the second ASEM in 1998 tried to support its Asian members

It's no secret that most busy American mothers use the TV set as a live-in babysitter. In some households the tube holds a child's attention for the odd half hour or two while mom works on dinner; in others it is the child's constant daytime companion. Is there any harm in this?

Debate on the question is very hot, and periodically research is published showing that TV reduces attention span, makes children anxious or tend to be violent. In today's cartoon David Horsey makes fun of the claims of "children's TV", the special programming that supposedly uses entertainment to help youngsters to learn to read and take their first steps in the big, diverse world outside their family. What do children really get from this programming?

Horsey's suspicion is that children's programming chiefly turns kids into TV addicts, not into readers or happy mixers. The kid in the cartoon, still at the age of pacifiers(奶嘴) and stuffed(填充) animals, is attracted by the figure on the screen. What is the stimulating message of this creature specifically designed to fascinate small children? "Can you say TV?" The sooner the kid learns the word, the more effectively he can remind his mother to turn on the tube.

A child hooked on TV is a viewer open to commercial messages, and there are plenty of those targeting children of all ages. Thus, at the very least, mom's search for peace and quiet sets the stage for her child's transformation(改变) into an American consumer -- and, of course, takes up time that could be used for other, perhaps more desirable, transformations.

57. What does the underlined word “tube” in the first paragraph refer to?

  A. babysitter       B. something interesting      C. television      D. toy

58.According to the passage, the reason why most busy American mothers use the TV set as a live-in babysitter is that _____

  A. they want their kids to learn something from the programs.

  B. they lack money to hire babysitters.

  C. they want their kids to be peaceful and quiet.

  D. the kids are keen on watching TV.

59. In David Horsey’s opinion, programs for children should ______

  A. reduce kid’s attention span.           B. help kids learn to read.

  C. make kids interested in it.            D. act as kids constant companion.

60. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?

  A. Children of all ages are attracted by TV.

  B. Mom encourages her child to become an American consumer.

  C. American kids should not spend so much time watching TV.

  D. A child addicted to TV can understand commercial messages.
