Police arrested seven people during a raid on an apartment in southern England, bringing to 21 in custody(拘留) in the hunt for accomplices(从犯) in the failed July 21 transit bombings.

Policemen determined to prevent further attacks also were probing(调查) possible ties between two of the bombing suspects(嫌犯) and Saudi Arabia, British newspapers reported. Police were searching for anyone who may have directed the attackers and built the explosives.

Police arrested the six men and one woman during a search of two buildings in Brighton, on the southern coast, said a police spokeswoman, speaking on condition of anonymity(匿名) because her department does not allow her to give her name. So far, 18 people have been arrested in Britain and three in Italy.

She said police believed there were more people who were involved in the July 21 attacks, in which four bombs partly exploded, and the deadly July 7 suicide bombings.

Both attacks targeted three subway trains and a double-decker bus. All the July 7 attackers were believed dead; police have arrested four suspects who they believed planted the explosives July 21.

“It’s extremely likely that there will be other people involved in harboring suspects and making the plans,” the spokeswoman said.

Key suspects were being interrogated(审问) in London in relation to the failed July 21 attempts, police said. Are the British people Europeans? This may seem a strange question to Africans and Asians, who tend to think of all white men as Europeans. But the British, when they are in Britain, do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans, to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel, who have never learnt how to speak English. Europe is “the Continent”: a place full of interest for English tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although geographically speaking Britain is a part of Europe, yet the fact that it is a separate island has made its people feel very, very insular(具岛国性的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe, and they sometimes annoy continental nations by failing to support them, or even to understand them, in time of need.

Where did the British people come from? This is an extraordinary interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded Britain at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century B.C, but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by a dark-haired Mediterranean race called Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes: first the Gaels, whose descendants(后裔) are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language; and secondly the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a good deal of civilization, but they never settled in Britain in very large numbers, so the British race survived until the overthrow of the Roman Empire by the “barbarians”, i.e. the numerous Germanic tribes which overran the whole of Western Europe.

64. The purpose of the passage is to _______.

   A. talk about Europeans

B. discus the origin of British people

   C. argue for the superiority of British people

D. compare the Europeans with Africans and Asians

65. It can be known from the passage that ______.

66. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

   A. Europeans are those who are unable to speak English

   B. those who invaded Britain came from the other side of the English Channel

   C. Britain is a place full of interest for those excitable foreigners

   D. Britain is the source of almost all the wars in Europe

67. Why do the British people feel insular?

   A. They are different from those people in the Continent.

   B. They sometimes fail to support the continent countries in time of need.

   C. They are separated geographically from the Continent.

   D. They are considered difficult to understand.

68. Which of the following is most likely to be discussed after this passage?

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend; she said “the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual, because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.

Point1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 p.m. and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?

Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make a call that brought the ambulance to her rescue.

Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.

Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near---but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”

Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers at the same time on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they are spacewalking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can connect the Internet, the biggest library on Earth.

72. How do you understand “Point1 The telephone creates the need to communicate,…”?

   A. People don’t communicate if there is no telephone.

   B. People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.

   C. People communicate more since telephone has been created.

   D. People communicate more because of more traffic.

73. Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phones?

   A. Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency.

   B. Mobile phones bring convenience as well as little secret to people.

   C. Mobile phones are so important that they should be encouraged.

   D. Mobile phones are part of people’s life.

74. It is possible to talk to complete strangers if you want through ______.

   A. the TV screen                                                B. a fax machine

   C. the phone line hooked up to the computer         D. a microphone

   A. Phone Power                            B. Kinds of phone

   C. How to Use Phones                   D. Advantage of Phones
