On May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. It happened a few minutes past three,
1my husband, Chris, fell from his horse as it2over a fence. Chris was paralyzed (瘫痪) from the chest down,3to breathe normally. As he was thrown from his horse, we entered into a life of
4with lots of unexpected challenges(挑战). We went from the "haves" to the “have-nots". Or so we thought.
5what we discovered later were all the gifts that came out of6difficulties. We came to learn that something7could happen in a disaster . All over the world people
8Chris so much that letters and postcards poured in every day. By the end of the third week in a
9center in Virginia, about 35,000 pieces of10had been received and sorted.
As11, we opened letter after letter. They gave us12and became a source of strength for us. We used them to13ourselves. I would go to the pile of letters marked with "Funny" if we needed a14, or to the "Disabled" box to find advice from people in wheelchairs or15in bed living happily and16.
These letters, we realized, had to be shared. And so17we offer one of them to you.
Dear Chris,
My husband and I were so sorry to hear of your18accident last week. No doubt your family and your friends are giving you the strength to face this 19challenge. People everywhere are also giving you best wishes every day and we are among those who are keeping you 20 .
Yours Sincerely,
Nancy Reagan

Dinah is one of the most good-natured children that ever lived, but she is very, very lazy. There is nothing she likes, or used to like, so much as to curl up in some warm corner in the sun and do nothing.
Dinah’s mother wished very much that her child should learn to read, but the lady who tried to teach her soon give it up. “It is no 1,” she said, “Dinah2not learn. She is not stupid, but too lazy.”
It happened soon that a young man from Massachusetts came to the house where Dinah lived. He brought with him something no one else in the neighborhood had ever seen before-a pair of roller-skates.
When Dinah saw the young man going rapidly up and down the piazza (广场) on his skates she was so3. She ran after him like a cat, her black eyes shining.
One day the young man allowed her to4the skates. The child was too happy for words. Of course she fell down, but did not 5at all.
“Look here, Dinah,” said the young man, “I understand that my aunt has been trying to teach you to read. Why didn’t you learn? Now, if you can read, I will send you a pair of good roller-skates.”
For a moment she said6, then exclaimed decidedly, “I’11 have those skates, sure.”
And she did. When she7her mind on her work, she could always do it well,8it was.
The lady who had before this found her 9difficult a child to teach, now had no trouble. If Dinah showed the least10of her former laziness, the word SKATES was enough to draw her attention back to her lesson instantly.
On New Year’s morning she received a box marked in large printed letters:
MISS DINAH MORRIS,
Care of Mrs. Lawrence Delaney,
NEW ORLEANS, LA.
If she can read what is on the outside of this box she can have what is inside.
And as Dinah read every word clearly and quickly, of course she had the fine roller-skates the box held. And now sitting curled up in the sun, doing nothing, is not the thing she likes to do best.

When I was about 8 years old, I asked my mum to buy me a certain biscuit because it sponsored(赞助)Flash Gordon. Gordon was a super-hero who1 for good deeds(事情)in outer space.
My mum would buy the2 for me because I3 the prize that came with it. The prize was a pair of glasses that Gordon4 .
However, in order to get the prize I had to5 the whole box of biscuits out because it was at the6 . I didn’t dare to think of7 my way to the prize because I was too8 . Yes, I wanted to be like Flash Gordon!9 the glasses came out from the bottom, I put them on. I felt like my favorite10 . I wore them everywhere my mum and I went. I even tried to wear them to11, but the teachers didn’t want a super-hero flying around the playground.
Over the years there were other prizes from many12 brands(牌子)of biscuits, but I was never really13 the biscuits, only the14 .
When you think about it,15 itself can be like a box of biscuits. Even as adults, we keep16 that prize at all costs. Just17 what we do at times. We become greedy(贪婪的)to get what we think is the prize.
Try to look at it from a different view. Wouldn’t it be better to18 the journey along the way ? In other words, don’t be impatient and pour the box. That will only spoil(破坏)the19 meaning of the prize. Enjoy what you have and be grateful. I promise your prize will20 , without having to push others out of the way to get it.

Learning to Accept
I learned how to accept life as it is from my father.1 ,he did not teach me acceptance when he was strong and healthy, but rather when he was 2and ill.
My father was3a strong man who loved being active, but a terrible illness4 all that away. Now he can no longer walk and he must sit quietly in a chair all day. Even talking is 5 . One night, I went to visit him with my sisters. We started6about life, and I told them about one of my 7 . I said that we must very often give things up8we grow—our youth, our beauty, our friends---but it always 9that after we give something up,we gain something new in its place. Then suddenly my father10 up. He said, “But, Peter,I gave up11 ! What did I gain?” I thought and thought, but I could not think of anything to say. 12 , he answered his own question: “I13the love of my family.” I looked at my sisters and saw tears in their eyes, along with hope and thankfulness.
I was also14by his words. After that, when I began to feel irritated(恼怒的)at someone, I15remember his words and become16 . If he could replace his great pain with a feeling of love for others, then I should be17to give up my small irritations. In this18 ,I learned the power of acceptance from my father.
Sometimes I19what other things I could have learned from him if I had listened more carefully when I was a boy. For now, though, I am grateful for this one20.

He11 the boy’s answers would be very bad, but when they12him and he examined them13, he was able to find only one small mistake in them. As this surprised him greatly, he14the paper repeatedly but still couldn’t find more than one mistake, so he15for the student to question him about it.
When he came and sat down, the lecturer asked him, “I16you came to my first lecture and you’ve been absent from all the others. But I’ve examined your 17carefully and I’ve found only one small mistake in it. I’m curious (好奇的) to know your 18.”
