Trees are useful to man in three very important ways. They provide him with wood and other 1 ; they give him shade; they help to prevent drought(干旱)and 2.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important.
Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire, but,3its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to4,the home country found itself faced by floods and starvation.
Even where a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for5to persuade the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food with ; and he can earn money by making charcoal or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after new trees. So, unless the government has a good system of control, or can6the people, the forests will slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that the villagers’ sons and grandsons have7trees. The results are even more serious; for where there are trees, their roots break the soil up—allowing the rain to sink in—and also bind(结合)the soil, thus preventing its8washed away easily, but where there are no trees ,the rain falls on hard ground and carrying9with it the rich top soil, in which crops10so well. With all the topsoil gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.

People in communities have slowly been pushed apart through the years, mostly because people simply aren’t taking the time to say a simple “hello,” After considering this phenomenon, I decided I was going to1the way I was doing things.
My2came one morning when I was in the community library. I passed by a girl who3her books out of her locker .Thinking like most that someone else would help her pick them up, I continued my way. However, when I had to4because I stupidly forgot my book, I noticed she had just finished packing them up by herself he one had stopped to5her.
“OK,” I thought to myself, “this is where I should have changed.”
My best opportunity came a few days later when I saw a man6by himself waiting for the library to open ,so I sat down next to him and began a7.It was difficult to get started ,and even when I had to say goodbye, almost every8from my new friend had a tone (语气) of doubt in it ,And who could blame him?
People aren’t used to making an9chat with a stranger. But a change, no matter how10it is needed, doesn’t just happen. It takes people like us to make it possible. I11you to take a small step out of your comfort zone and try to make someone’s day a little brighter, Together, we can really make come12as a whole.

When Dunstan Cass left the cottage, Silas Marner was only a hundred meters away. He was walking home from the village, where he had1to buy what he needed2his next day’s work. His legs were tired, but he felt almost happy. He was looking forward to 3,when he would bring out his gold. Tonight he had an extra reason to hurry home. He was going to eat hot meat, which was4for him. And it would5him nothing, because someone had given him a piece of meat as a present. He left it6over the fire. The door key was needed to hold it safe in place, but Cass was not at all 7about leaving his gold in the cottage with the door 8. He could not imagine that a thief would 9his way through the mist, rain and darkness to the little cottage by the quarry (釆石场).
When he reached his cottage and opened the door, he did not notice10anything was different. He 11his wet coat, and pushed the meat 12the fire.13he was warm again, he began to think about his gold. It seemed a long time to wait until after super, when he usually brought out coins to look at. 14he decided to bring out his gold immediately, while the meat was still cooking.
But when he 15the floorboards near the loom (织布机),and saw the16hole ,he did not understand17. His heart beat violently as his trembling hands felt all round the hole. There was18! He put his hands to his head and tried to think. Had he put his gold in a different place, and forgotten about it? He19every corner of this small cottage, until he could not pretend to himself any more. He had to accept the truth 一 his gold had been 20

I became a gardener when I was twelve. My early1of gardening may not have originated from my love for nature. It was to2my parents.
At that time, we had a big yard in which a beautiful maple tree stood. But my mother often looked with3at this work of natural art. Those golden leaves seemed like tons of rubbish to her, “something else to4!” Seeing the neighbors busy with gardening, my father ever thought it a waste of time.
At that age, I always did something5to whatever my parents did! If gardening were something they found6, I would plant a garden!
I planted some lily(百合花)seeds in the yard. But they failed to7.I continued to plant sunflower seeds and roses. Wild8joy, I found the first rose bloom(开花).One by one, the flowers bloomed their heads off.9, I was touched by this land of wonder.
10, my parents showed no interest in my garden. My father even11at me because he found it was12to move around my garden to the driveway. To my mother’s13, I put in her vase my real roses which, in her eyes, were simply weeds14flowers.
Regardless of their15,I kept on planting my garden and16to enjoy the pleasure of gardening. Plants make such good companions: they breathe, they bloom, they17to care and love.
It has been many years since I made my first garden out of my desire to18my parents. Today I become known as Mrs. Greenthumbs, teaching gardening and hosting a gardening show which makes my parents feel very19. And now I could say it is my affection for20that makes me a real gardener.

Year after year my brothers, sister and I would lie in bed awake on Christmas morning. We were just1to hear my father’s voice saying it was all right to2. Usually I was the first one jumped out of bed. I can still3my growing eagerness(渴望) for the4every year.
Even now as I5the boxes of Christmas decorations(装饰品) I can see the familiar ones: the presents with our birth years on them, our five stockings, four for the6, one for the dog. It used to be easy for us to7when to put up the decorations. But now since we all have8and social lives, it is usually a hurried activity.
As we get older, the season almost brings a9to a little place in our hearts. The worst was year after my grandparents had10. We couldn’t go to their house to celebrate the holiday anymore.11, we just had a get-together in my house. Now when I12to it, I miss the special13my grandfather gave me for Christmas. I even miss him14me “Jessie”, even though I can’t15when people call me that.
Things change, not always for the good,16not always for the bad either. And the things that don’t17have the most important meaning to us, and I am sure they will be there for the18of our lives. After all, every time I hear my father’s19“All right you guys, come on down, nice and slow” and we go down the stairs, first my brother, then me, then my sister, then my older brother, I still20the true Christmas spirit.
