The Florida sun baked my shoulders as I worked along the I-595 freeway near Fort Lauderdale, picking up rubbish. I paused to1the sweat off my forehead and look up at the cloudless blue sky.“2can’t it rain?” I thought. That would3things down.
I thought about my4, who were probably sitting in an air-conditioned5right now. I’d had some problems in school,6my parents decided to let me7full-time with my dad, We both worked for my uncle, who had taken8of a maintenance(道路养护)company. It was up to us to keep the roads9of rubbish. The job was10and dirty, especially on hot days11this. I wondered why I ever agreed to do it.
We continued our12route along the I-595,13for the overpass bridge. Then I noticed an area where some14were broken on the ground. It wasn’t like that before.
“Dad! Pull over! I want to15something out.”
I jumped off the truck and rushed to the bridge. Something was telling me to16…there wasn’t much time.17I saw a Toyota that18upside down in the tree. Maybe it was a stolen car that somebody19there, I thought. Then, just at that20, I noticed something moving. It was a bloody leg poking out of the driver’s side window!
“Heeeelp!”a lady moaned.

I am sure many people have said about me, “He must be the happiest man in the world!” But they were wrong.1 I was famous and had2 money, I was not really happy. I found myself asking, “3 does all this not give me real happiness?”
Newspapers said, “Kriss Akabusi is the European champion. He has also4 an Olympic bronze medal.” Now before all this happened, I had5 , “If I can become a champion, I will be happy. I will6 a lot of money and then enjoy7 . I will have a good time.”
When I went to the Edinburgh Games, in my hotel8 I found a book by my bedside. It was called What’s Real Happiness in Life? I9 this book up and read some of the stories in it. The book mainly told about the happiness brought by helping others. But I said to10 , “All these things are too11 for me to do.”
But that night I had a12 . I found myself standing by a river. I13 a voice calling to me from the other side of the river. The voice said, “You know helping others is as14 as crossing the river, and it’s not as difficult as you imagine.” Then suddenly I awoke. I realized I was15 now when compared to before. I found I had real16 of mind.
So I can now tell my friends what I have17 . Being famous and having a lot of money18 gave me happiness. So all I can say to you is this—we are19 when we think that to be famous and rich will make us happy. Now I have a children’s TV program called Record Breakers. I have no20 about what tomorrow will bring.

Now that I am no longer young, I have friends whose mothers have passed away. I have heard these sons and daughters say they never fully appreciated their mothers 1 it was too late to tell them. I am blessed with the dear mother who is still alive. I 2 her more each day. My mother does not change, but I 3. As I grow older and wiser, I realize 4 an exceptional person she is. How 5 that I am unable to speak these words in her 6, but they flow easily from my pen.
How does a daughter begin to thank her mother for life itself? For the love, patience and just 7 hard work that go into 8 a child? For running after a toddler (学走步的小孩), for understanding a 9 teenager, for tolerating (忍受;容忍) a college student who knows 10 ? For waiting for the day when a daughter 11 how wise her mother really is?
How does a 12 woman thank a mother for 13 to be a mother? For being ready 14 advice (when asked) or remaining 15 when it is most appreciated? For not saying, “I told you so,” when she could have uttered these words 16? For being 17 herself-loving, thoughtful, patient, and forgiving?
I don’t know how, dear God, except to ask you to bless her as richly as she 18 and to help me live up to the example she has 19. I pray that I will look as good in the eyes of my children as my mother 20 in mine.

Some people think they have an answer to the problems of automobiles crowding and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle.
In a great1cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York, some bike riders have even2a group called Bike for a Better City, they3that if more people rode bikes to work, there would be fewer cars in the downtown and therefore less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to4the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes-for bicycles5-on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be6. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bicycles.
But no bike lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don’t like the idea-they say it will7traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don’t like this idea-they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
They city government hasn’t yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park is closed to cars and the roads may be used by bikes only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not8and9fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. If that happens, the safest place to bike may be in the10.
