In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were few people on the earth, and natural resources(资源) seemed to be1.
Today things are2, the world has become too3. We are using up our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are4our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, human life on the earth will not5.
Everyone6today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing7, more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, 8will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we9to use bigger and more powerful machines to10more and more trees.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. 11,in most countries wastes are12put into rivers or into the sea, and there are13laws to stop this. We know, too, that if the14of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years there will not be enough food. What can we do to15these problems ?
If we eat more vegetables and less 16, there will be more food available for everyone. Land that is used to grow crops17five times more people than land where animals are kept. Our natural resources will18longer if we learn to recycle them. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth19.
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner20in the future.

Angels
My friend Heather mentioned that she had never seen an Angel. Then I remembered the1I had with my sister Sandra earlier this week.
This will be Sandra’s first Christmas without her husband. This summer he died in her arms. On Thursday, she was in the store2 for an ideal card for her two sons and daughter. Time passed by quickly as she3the many choices. She wanted a card that sent something special to each of them, 4she knew they would have a(n)5 place in their heart this holiday season.
Finally! She found the one that expressed the6feeling. The words expressed the feelings that she wished to share. However, a sharp pain pierced(穿透) her heart when she realized that the card was7“mom and dad.” She stood there, 8it close for a long time, unable to move from the9 . Tears began to run down her cheeks.
“Is there something I can do for you?” a 10voice asked. She 11to face a stranger, a woman, who was looking at her with 12and concern. “Uh…oh...OH!” Sandra responded, “I can’t give this card to my children because…because my husband died and this is the 13card.”
Hearing this, the stranger’s face softened with sympathy(同情) and love. She reached out and14my sister into her arms, giving her unspoken permission to cry in the protection of her embrace(拥抱). She 15held my sister until her calmness16. “Thank you for listening to me cry on,” was what my sister said when all was better. “You are welcome, and I am so sorry for your17,” the stranger answered and said goodbye to her.
During her telling of this event I was feeling 18that I hadn’t been there. My sister needed me and a stranger had to do my 19. “You know,” she went on, “a friend suggested that it was like meeting with an Angel.” My20 disappeared in an instant. My sister required an Angel, and I think that is exactly what she got.

In America, where labor costs are so high, do-it-yourself is a way of life. Many people1their own car, build their own garages, even rebuild their own2.Soon they may also be writing their own books. In Hollywood there is a company3publishes(出版) Children’s books 4the help of computers.Although other book 5also publish that way, this particular company is very 6.It “personalizes”(使个性化)the book by having the computer make the reader the leading character in the story. Here is 7they do it.Let us say your child 8Jenny.She lives on Oak Drive in St. Louis, has a dog named Spot,a cat named Tabby, and three playmates9names are Betty,Sandy ,and Jody. The computer uses this10to fill out a story that has11been prepared and illustrated(发行).The story is then printed(印刷) with standard equipment 12 a hard-cover book.A child who 13such a book might say,”This book is about me”;the company therefore calls14the Me-book Publishing Company”.
Children like the Me-books because they like to see their own names in print and15of their friends and their pets. 16more important ,”personalization” has been17to be important tool(工具) in18enthusiasm(热情) for reading. So Me-books are helping19to learn how to read,20appealing to(吸引) that natural desire to see his own name in print.

Each year this organization of men came to the Children's Home. The men would take us in groups of five to downtown to do some 1shopping.
I 2 going with this gentleman three years in a row. He would 3 us shopping , then he would ask us if we wanted to go to the 4. As he pulled his wallet out to pay for our tickets I watched him 5. He looked over at me and just 6 with his great big smile. During the movie he bought us all the popcorn and candy. I remember thinking how 7 it was that someone would 8 their own money on me. I remember thinking that he was like Santa Claus.
We all laughed at the 9movie and had a good laugh about it. The man would laugh really hard and 10 over and touch my hair to comfort me. I would just look at him, and he would just 11 smiling with his great big wonderful smile. My nerve completely disappeared.
That trip to the movies was the first time in my life that I ever 12as if someone really cared about me. It was a wonderful feeling which I have never forgotten, even to this day, 13 later. I don't know if that man felt sorry for me, 14 I do know this: If I ever 15 the big lottery, that man will find out that he carried a million-dollar smile.
This is 16I believe it is so important that the organizations 17 to reach out and help the children who are less fortunate. 18my particular case, it was this man's personal act of 19 that will be remembered. Just one little act of kindness.
I thank you, kind Sir, for a(n) 20 which I now share with my children and grandchildren fifty years later.

Time is very important in our lives. It organizes our everyday moments. However, time never had any importance in my life until I1a watch from my father, which organized my life and made me more responsible. It’s round in the center with two silver bands(带) that2around my wrist and all of it is made of silver.
I received this3on a gray – sky day. I had to go to the airport at 9:00 am to4up my Uncle Ali and take him to my father’s house.5, I was late because I was6out with my friends. Later on that day, around 11:00 am, I7my uncle, but I was very late for him. He had8the airport and taken a taxi to my father’s house.
I got to my father’s house at 2:00 pm that day and felt ashamed of myself at that moment. After I said hi to my9father and tired uncle, my father asked me to sit next to him and handed me this watch as a gift from him. Then he said, “Peter, did you have10with your friends today?” I answered, “Yes, father, and 11apologized for not meeting my Uncle Ali.” He said, “What you12was not very nice and you should be sorry for your action.” I was ashamed and said, “Father, I’11 never do it again . I promise.” He said, “I hope today you learned something important, and this watch will be a 13for you.” He told me to take this watch and use it as an organizer of my 14.
I learned a very important lesson from my father: to respect time and never to be late to get someone. This watch is15to me, not because of its price, but because of the lesson that I learned from it.

US president Barack Obama told students that it takes hard work in school to prepare for a rewarding career in his “back to school” speech,1last Tuesday in Virginia, US. Here is excerpt (节选)from his speech:
I know that sometimes, you get the2that you can be rich and successful without any hard work –3your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things. But the truth is, being successful is4.You won’t love every subject you study. Not every homework assignment will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at5the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most6.JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was712 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was8his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said. “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they understand that you can’t let your failures9you. No one’s10being good at things; you become good at things through hard work.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of11. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you’re12, even when you’re discouraged, and when you feel like other people have given up on yourself, you won’t give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.

As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation.1you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to 2down. But relaxation is 3for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a 4part of everyday life and there is no way to 5it. In fact, it is not the bad thing that it is often supposed to be. A 6amount of stress is important to provide motivation and give 7to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control 8it can lead to poor performance and 9health.
The amount of stress a person can bear 10very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such 11are obviously chief material for managerial.(管理的) responsibilities. Other people lose heart at first 12of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in 13form , we react both physically and mentally. In fact we make a choice between “14and fight”. And in more ancient days the choices made the 15between life and death. The crisis we meet today are 16to be so extreme, but however little the stress is, it requires the same response. It is when such a reaction 17 a long time, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes 18. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. 19we cannot remove stress from our lives, we need to find ways to deal with it.
So what do you think of20? What is your way to deal with it?

It was early in the morning, on a lonely road. It's1heavily. A 9-year-old boy was in the car with his mother, who was2him to school. Suddenly, the car went off the road, 3several times, and came to rest upside down in a ditch(沟渠) filled with water.
Luckily, both the mother and son were 4seatbelts. The mother suffered a blow to her head and was unable to move. The boy was frightened but 5. As water came through broken windows in the car, he 6unbuckled (解开) himself, climbed out of the 7window, made his way around to the driver's side, and reached inside the 8to free his trapped mother. With great effort, he managed to 9her, pull her through the window and up to the road, where they were soon 10.
His mother later recalled her experience of the 11. Being unable to move or even 12to offer instructions ( 指导) or encouragement to her son, she was 13by her little son's action. She recalled 14her boy saying out loud as he pulled her through the water, “I think I can, I think I can!”
It seemed 15that this little boy's act of courage was from one of his favourite books: The Little Engine that Could. In that 16, when everyone else had17hope, the Little Engine carried the heavy load of toys and good things to eat over the hill to the children waiting on the other side. He had 18and took action. Obviously this book had left a 19impression before the accident that rainy 20and motivated ( 激励) the son to take action if the terrifying moments.
